With the news breaking yesterday that Scott Pioli was officially named as the Chiefs’ general manager, the speculation surrounding Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz is just beginning to heat up.Ferentz and Pioli are longtime friends, dating back to their days together on Bill Belichick‘s staff in Cleveland. A longstanding rumor has it that once Pioli finally got out from under Belichick’s immense New England shadow, Ferentz would follow wherever he landed. In fact, the rumblings around the Cleveland area were part of the reason the Browns and Pioli failed to reach an agreement on their GM job was because the executive was insisting on bringing Ferentz along with him.In this morning’s Iowa City Press-Citizen, columnist Dan Hardy lays out the case for Ferentz to stay at Iowa. Or why he could possibly bolt for Kansas City. And the Des Moines Register is kind enough to remind us that it’s reporters, websites and bloggers — not Pioli — who have placed Ferentz atop the GM’s wish list.(Wait, we resemble that remark. Oddly enough, though, we’re not offended.)Look, until Pioli makes a decision on the future of current Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards, the rumors will continue to swirl of a Pioli-Ferentz teaming. And, God forbid, if Pioli decides to can Edwards, the crush of rumors will smash the needle on the speculation meter. The best Iowa fans can hope for is a quick resolution to the Herm situation. And root like hell for Edwards to retain his job.
