In a shocking surprise to absolutely no one, the Bowl Championship Series presidents officially rejected the Mountain West Conference’s playoff plan. The proposed eight-team playoff system that would allegedly allow greater access to the championship game than the current BCS system was proposed by Mountain West commissioner Craig Thompson officially died after the presidential oversight committee rejected the concept via teleconference. (Is that worst than breaking off an engagement via email?) “There was no overall support for the proposal, although some conferences were interested in considering certain elements of it in the future — particularly those related to revenue, access and governance of the BCS arrangement,” said University of Oregon president David Frohnmayer, the committee chairman. Looks like we’re heading toward some Congressional involvement if the system is ever going to change, although if you asked a few conference commissioners, our congressmen might not be able to truly understand the complexities of the bowl system.
