Illini’s Berry Uses His ‘Get Out Of Jail’ Card

28 days into a 60-day sentence, Illinois defensive lineman Josh Brent has been released from jail, the Champaign News-Gazette is reporting.

Brent was sentenced on June 2 to the 60 days after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor driving under the influence charge. Good behavior while serving his time cut the sentence in just more than half.

The lineman was originally facing a felony charge as his license was suspended at the time of his arrest. A plea agreement resulted in the jail sentence, plus 200 hours of community service and a $1,000 fine.

Brent, who is penciled in as a starter on the Illini’s defensive line, was suspended indefinitely at the time of his arrest by head coach Ron Zook. There’s no word yet as to when -- or if -- his suspension will be lifted.
