In talking with the members of the media in a setting designed for conversation about the Fighting Irish's prospects for the 2009 season, the Irish head coach was in no mood to talk about the Fighting Irish's prospects for '09.
Instead, he used the pulpit to seemingly called out himself, his players and the football program as a whole.
"I'm tired of telling everyone how good we're going to be, and that's not the product... I can sit there and tell you (about) lofty goals and my expectations, but guess what, it's time for us to back them up," Weis said. "There's no sense giving you a lot of hot air about lofty expectations without trying to back it up and that's what we're going to try to do."
And the fifth-year coach wasn't finished.
"Don't tell me about expectations, fellas. Show me. Don't tell me how good we're going to be. I'm not going to tell you how good we're gonna be. It's time for us to show you."
After a 10-15 record during his last two seasons in South Bend, it's about time Weis channeled his inner Missouri and challenged his players to live up to that state's motto.
"Show me."
It's quite clear that the coach realizes this season will be a pivotal one for both himself and the Irish program.
Given a schedule that has 10 wins written all over it, he needs his players to buy into what he's selling. Right now.
If not?
Gear up for a deluge of Urban-to-South Bend rumors, Gainesville. Regardless of whether they are based in reality or not.
Weis is a fifth year coach, not third...
Weis knows this team isn't worthy of being ranked which is why he is trying to keep the hype down so if they underperform as usual he can hopefully keep his job.
