Baylor-Irish game at the Superdome a no-go?

A proposed match-up at the Louisiana Superdome between Baylor and Notre Dame in 2012 has apparently been grounded before it got a chance to gain any type of traction.

Talks between the two sides have been ongoing, but never seemed to get even remotely serious.

Here’s the Waco Tribune‘s take on the situation:

Paul Hoolahan, chief executive officer of the Sugar Bowl, said there was interest but it never materialized. Baylor and Notre Dame officials expressed interest in such a matchup in early 2008.

The Superdome became a preferred site for the game after officials realized it would be the only way for NBC, which has rights to televise Notre Dame, to show the game.

Baylor and Notre Dame initially talked about playing the game in the Dallas Cowboys’ new stadium in Arlington. But ESPN’s contract with the Big 12 covers the conference’s seven-state area.

According to Baylor athletic director Ian McCaw, the two schools will now focus their attention on other options and other venues for the game.
