Like a skinny freshman who just threw down with the senior B.M.O.C., Lane Kiffin continued to lob verbal grenades at Urban Meyer as the Florida head coach walked away from the scuffle and the Tennessee head coach dabbed at the blood pooling on the corner of his mouth.
This time, though, Kiffin may have had a good reason for the latest wagging of the tongue in his long-running “feud” with the Gators.
Earlier today, Meyer seemed to take a not-so-subtle shot at the Volunteers’ game plan, basically saying that Tennessee played not to get blown out.
“I didn’t feel like they were going after the win,” Meyer said. “They wanted to shorten the game. I think that was the plan. There are 10 minutes to go and they’re not in a no-huddle. It’s 23-6 and no urgency (on UT’s part).
“The way we lose a game there is throw an interception. Why put yourself in that position. Let’s find a way to win the game. We’re not trying to impress the pollsters, we’re trying to win the game. A lot of it had to do with the way they were playing. It made our life a little easier.”
Meyer also seemed to lay a portion of the blame for Florida’s lackluster offensive performance on the fact that several players had come down with flu-like symptoms during the week leading up to the game.
After initially saying he didn’t want to respond to Meyer’s comments, Kiffin simply couldn’t help himself when asked about worrying over the flu bug hitting Tennessee.
“I don’t know. I guess we’ll wait and after we’re not excited about a performance, we’ll tell you everybody was sick.”
Zing!!!
Look, you have to admit that Meyer was right; Kiffin was playing not to lose and relying on the Gators to make a critical mistake or two — or four — but it was just what the less-talented Volunteers needed to do. Shorten the game, and hope you can overcome the talent advantage held by the team on the other sidelines.
Still, Kiffin needed to defend himself and his program against Meyer’s perceived slight, and he did just that.
No blood, no foul. For now.
Can Florida get anymore pathetic?
Tennessee lost.
In 2010, Florida will still be battling for the SEC East title and the BCS, and Tennessee will still be rebuilding while Phil Phulmer remains PO’d.
Yep. They get exposed for the frauds they are, and the excuse making immediately starts. Kiffin’s absolutely right. They just can’t face the fact that they’re not really a # 1 team. Too bad they don’t play ‘Bama this year – then they’d really be exposed.
They will play ‘Bama this year in Atlanta. Unless LSU beats ‘Bama on November 7. Geaux Tigers.
Kiffin also believes that Tennessee would have won the game if they had a field goal kicker who could make 75-yard kicks.
Kiffin will never know what it feels like to win the SEC.
Kiffin has a thousand chances to keep his mouth shut. He should use one. I can’t wait until next week when the flu bug hits Tennesee. Like they need an excuse why they lost. I have said it before I will say it again… Lane kiffin will be fired before he ever wins an SEC game. EVER!
kiffin is world class con artist.
kiffin spent his years at usc knee deep in the bushgate and many other instances of cheating.
then, the kiffster lied at all davis about his past in order the get the oakland job.
although all davis is losing it these days, davis still knew that he has been conned by the kiffster and terminated the kiffster for cause, which means no golden parachutes.issues which the kiffster cannot really contest.
the kiffster repeated the same lies to the vols in order to get that head coaching job.
as it turns out, the only reason why the gators margin of victory was not much higher was that the florida football team was decimated by the swine flu, something which has happened at many college football teams this season.
the vols will catch on and get all of their money back from the kiffster, plus punitive damages.
then , the vols can go out and hire a great and honest football head coach, as has always been the habit of the vols.
kiffin will be remembered for many things, none of them good, and will have many nightnames.
so far, the mouth that roared is in 1st place.
I’m not a UF fan in the least, but Kiffin should not say another word until his program does something on the field. Until Steve Spurrier retires, the role of Vocal Coach of a Mediocre Program is occupied (plus, he does it a lot better than Lane).
Kiffin only continues to make Al Davis look like he’s still competent and lucid.
I’m sorry…..how many wins doe UT have? Zero, Zip, Nada for being an 0-2 team Kiffin needs to shut his mouth and do his talking on the field.
Lane STILL talking trash for only posting a win against WKU. Are you kidding me. Does this bafoon realize that he will have only have 2 wins going into November this season. He plays Ohio University this week and then Auburn, Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina. Daddy needs to tell him to keep his mouth shut.
Kiffin is pathetic. His players had to suffer through his ‘gameplan’ instead of fighting for a victory. Welcome to the SEC.
BAMA will take Florida down this year. Let’s hope they are still undefeated when the the two play in Atlanta. I can hear all the Tebow and Urban hype up to game time. This year BAMA has the offense and the defense. Averaging over 500 yards per game. BAMA 40 Florida 28
I don’t think Meyer was making excuses. The week before the game, there had been over 40 cases of swine flu reported in Gainesville. Players were sick and he was concerned. If it was just an excuse, he probably wouldn’t have administered flu shots to the entire team following the game. Besides, why would Meyer make excuses for a game he won by two scores?
Florida is the real deal.
I bet when there were five minutes left and Tennessee had the ball down 10, Urban wasn’t thinking the Vols weren’t playing to win. Ask Brandon James if the Vols were soft. Look, Kiffen is pulling Meyer out of his reserved self. Meyer comes off looking like he needs xanax. Wonder why he didn’t run it up. It is clearly bothering him. Run Kiffen down if you like, but the Vols showed up and they are recruiting players Florida would love to have. If you know and understand football, then you can see how Florida needs NuKeese Richardson and Marsalis Teague right now…they were on Kiffen’s sidelines. The future is bright over there and everyone should be glad.
