Gun accident claims life of Southern Miss punter

Sad news coming out of Hattiesburg this morning as Southern Miss issued a press release just moments ago announcing the death of freshman punter Peter Wilkes.

According to the release, Wilkes died as a result of a gun accident at his home in Union, Tennessee.

The accident occurred Thursday night and Wilkes passed away Friday morning.

“We are obviously shocked and devastated to hear the news about Peter’s passing,” Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora said in a statement. “Peter was an integral part of this football program and our thoughts and prayers are with his family members during this difficult time.”

Wilkes was a walk-on punter, who was at home during the University’s fall break. He was not a member of the travel party for this week’s game.

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Peter Wilkes.
