There are some people who believe that Twitter is the greatest thing since sliced bread. There are others who feels its very existence is either the second or third sign of the apocalypse.
At this point in time, it’s safe to assume that UCLA’s Randall Carroll finds himself in the latter grouping.
The freshman wide receiver has found himself in a bit of hot Twitter over a posting he made on the social networking website. In a message to a highly-touted recruit, Carroll used a racial epithet to describe Bruins offensive coordinator Norm Chow.
“man oregon, stanford and cal should have been easy wins ,, but sh-t thys n-gg- norm chow dnt be trustin us ,, so it is what it is.”
(Somewhere, Bob Griese just cringed.)
(As did English teachers all across America.)
(And if you think I’m addressing the right/wrong of using the n-bomb to describe a person of Chinese descent, you must be outside your mind.)
Head coach Rick Neuheisel wasn’t aware of the twitter comment until just before UCLA’s game yesterday, and didn’t learn the exact nature of the slur until after the game.
For his part, Carroll apologized for the tweet. Sorta.
“I didn’t mean to disrespect him or downgrade his coaching or anything,” said Carroll. “I just thought he didn’t trust us at a time…we’re young. We’re frustrated with losing. I didn’t expect to come here and lose that much. I thought we were going to turn it around but we know it’s going to take some time. Hopefully we can get it together.”
In summation, during the last 24 hours, we’ve had a white TV announcer talking about a Colombian NASCAR driver eating tacos, and a black WR refer to his Chinese-by-heritage OC as a n-gg-.
As Rodney King was wont to say, can’t we all just get our racial stereotypes and epithets correct?
Please tell me “thys” is some new slang I haven’t heard (or seen) of yet. Because no one’s really THAT stupid, are they?
Al Sharpton is probably sitting somewhere smiling and saying good job BROTHER.
So is their going to be any punishment for this player putting down his coach for all the world to read? Tennessee Coach Kiffin does not put up with players complaining about or to coaches. He just released a great player from the team for yelling at coaches on national television….and the player did not use the “N” word. If this player gets away with this, then it should be open season for any person of any race to use the word and fear no more retributions.
Please… this is the bRuins afterall. What do you expect? I am more shocked about his comment that he did not expect to be losing this much going to UCLA. Further to that, disrespecting an offensive coordinator of Chow’s ability? Are you kidding me? Chow has coached more heisman trophy winners than the bRuins have had in their entire history. He has also won more national titles. If it wasn’t for Chow they would be 0-7 right now.
