In somewhat of a surprising move, ESPN color analyst Bob Griese has been suspended for one game for a remark he made about NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya over the weekend.
Griese had been scheduled to work a game this weekend, although the specific game hadn’t been determined. Now, Griese won’t be working at all.
According to an ESPN spokesperson, Griese is aware of the suspension and understands that his remark was inappropriate.
During the broadcast of the Ohio State-Minnesota game, the network did a preview of the upcoming race by showing the top five drivers in the Chase. When Chris Spielman asked where my Montoya was, Griese responded that he “was out having a taco.”
Montoya downplayed the comment yesterday after the race, as did the part-owner for Montoya’s race team, Felix Sabates.
Remember America?
Yeah, that died.
Silly…overkill.
I’m into diversity and against racism, but ESPN’s decision is flat out wrong Griese was being humorous and his remark offered no malice. Believe it or not, tacos do come from South America and so does Juan Pablo Montoya. Big Deal!
The wussification of America continues. Geez i am so sick of this BS….. Suspended? really ? WTF?
I know for a fact Montoya was having a perro chorizo, in adobo salsa.
Ridiculous, get real.
Can ESPN please grow up? Who decides what is offensive? Griese should have quit rather than be treated this way. I’m of Italian descent, and guess what – I LIKE PASTA!! If someone says I must be off somewhere having manicotti, it might be true and I’M NOT OFFENDED !!
Bob Griese died for Al Sharpton’s sins.
ESPN has gone to far. Griese’s remarks were not ment to be harmful. Anyone with half of common sense could see that, except the ESPN brain trust. What is happening with this country? A simple humorous comment brings a suspention, shame on ESPN. Is the comment “having a taco” now to be considered a ‘suspention’ offense for ESPN commentators?
It is not a big deal unless the comment was made toward a black man and then it would have been a different story with an immediate firing and all kinds of public out cry. He just should not have said it. All of us would receive some type of reprimand if said at the work place.
