Ed Orgeron could be the next coach from Knoxville to be called to the commish's office.
According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, the Volunteers assistant head coach made some pointed comments about the officiating in the Tennessee-Alabama game during a Knoxville Quarterback Club get-together yesterday, saying basically that the upper-echelon teams seemingly are always on the receiving end of the benefit of the doubt when it comes to questionable calls.
"Seems like some people get the calls and some people don't," Orgeron said. "I've been in this league and I've been a part of that. Whether that's true or not, you can never prove that.
"I do know this: there were some very questionable calls in that game that could have went either way and they went Alabama's side. There were very questionable calls throughout the season and it seems they go for the better team. Whether that's true or not, we can never prove that but that's what it seems like."
This whole SEC officiating fiasco has taken on a life of its own in recent weeks.
Orgeron is at least the fourth coach to publicly lambaste the officials, and that's not counting Vanderbilt's Bobby Johnson saying that he'd "have to get in line to complain" to the SEC's head of officiating, Rogers Redding, about a couple of calls in the loss to South Carolina this past Saturday.
Once again, I don't know what the SEC can do about this public sniping, but they need to do something to put a band-aid on the shotgun wounds during the season and perform some serious surgery in the offseason to repair the damage their officials -- and coaches -- have created.
Fix job.
They can start by trying to improve there image, instead of coming down on the Coaches, myabe its time they started get on the refs. This has been going on way too long. We put these Refs up on some special pillow, if they blow a call they should be held accountable for it. Thats what happens in the real work force. These guys are doing a job, doesn't make them special, they just wear funny uniforms.
It's not just in the SEC..notre dame gets seriously questionable calls to go their way every week. Not that ND is an "upper echelon" team by any stretch, but it's to just in the SEC.
Instant replay was supposed to clear up the problem. SEC games don't utilize it correctly. Every play is scrutinized in the Big 10. They have their issues also, but not to the extent of the SEC. It is every week in the SEC.
Ask Urban Meyer.......he'll claim he knows nothing of bad officiating....but wait til he is on the opposite end of a call that costs him a game.
Ed,
Some teams in this league have great coaching staffs and they end up winning at least 10 games. Sort of like Houston Nutt did with your players at Ole Piss last year. I guess he got calls you never got. But here is how you can fix your issue with SEC officials Eddie O: coach better so your team is an elite team in the SEC. What about the call in the end zone when Rogan didn't allow Julio to go up for the fade pass? Was that one of those close calls that went Bama's way? Learn how to coach instead of just recruit and run your mouth and maybe UT will get some of those calls in the future. It also wouldn't hurt to beat UCLA at home. That is embarrasing to the conference and their officials will take it out on you. Try to get to 6 wins so you can head to Nashville for the bowl season. Becasue of course, you can't spell MUSIC CITY wthout U-T.
This is hysterical. When the Vols were on top of the heap, did they do a lot of whining about how the upper echelon teams always get the calls? Nah. If they'd won the game, would they be whining about the officiating? Nah. It's your conference, too, folks. Rip it to shreds and people will think back on your championships and assume they were tainted, too.
@DMurph ... That's good, hon. You've learned six whole letters of the alphabet and use the same ones on every post. Only 20 more to go. Try this: "Cry Baby." You already know "b" and the "y" is repeated, so it's only four new letters. Shouldn't be too difficult. Once you learn it, have it printed on a t-shirt so everyone knows you on sight.
@ Deb
Thanks for the hysteria comment. I find it deeply ironic that my two word post elicited such venom.
I couldn't care less about any of these teams. Your question, "When the Vols were on top of the heap, did they do a lot of whining about how the upper echelon teams always get the calls?" and subsequent response is a relativist and irrelevant one.
Consistently suspect officiating is worthy of comment.
@DMurph ...
Well, since you're clearly capable of making intelligent comments, for heaven's sake make them! Continually posting "fix job" just makes you sound like all the losers I've been reading for two days on the pro blogs. They lose, they whine about the officiating--it's all a conspiracy. There's no logic to their rants and no evidence of any conspiracy and no motive for the NFL to favor one team over another.
In the NCAA, on the other hand, the entire officiating system seems suspect, as does the BCS. And it's not fair to single out the SEC. These coaches are just using it to rattle their rivals because there's always been that kind of bad blood in the SEC. This just undermines the conference. But if you want to talk about the problems throughout college ball, PLEASE DO. My frustration was with you just posting "fix job." Now that I read this, it sounds like you could say much more (and if you just start whining about Fla. and Alabama, I'll be very disappointed :-)
Maybe if Ogeron wasn't drunk all the time he and Kayla could learn the rules TOGETHER!!!
