Danielson: Heisman 'Tebow's to lose'

Entering the 2009 season, it was widely assumed that the Heisman trophy would go to one of three players — Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy.

A combination of Bradford’s twice-injured shoulder, Tebow struggling for the first time since landing in Gainesville and McCoy’s fair-to-middlin’ play, however, has swung the Heisman doors wide open.

Unless you happen to be Gary Danielson.  And you are looking through the football with SEC-colored glasses.

In an interview with the Florida Times-Union, Danielson inexplicably makes the argument that the Heisman is “still Tim Tebow’s lose.”  Seriously, he does.

He is in the driver’s seat,” Danielson said, presumably with a straight face. “Of course he has to do something, but he is going to get the visibility to do it. Anybody who votes for the Heisman before Championship Saturday is over with Tebow, [Alabama's] Mark Ingram and [Texas'] Colt McCoy potentially playing in their championship on Dec. 5, their votes really shouldn’t count.”

Actually, Gary, what shouldn’t count is the opinion of someone with an obvious bias and slant in their line of thinking, skewed in large part by the conference his network’s in bed with.

Of course Tebow still has a shot at the Heisman.  It is, after all, as wide open a race as there’s been in many a year.  In fact, it would be more accurate to say there is a whole gaggle of players fighting for control of the Heisman steering wheel.

But, no, you decide to go with over-the-top hyperbole like it’s “Tebow’s to lose” or St. Timothy being “in the driver’s seat”.  It’s embarrassing at bare minimum, and at worst what happens when you have an entire network beholden to one conference.  Especially one as all-powerful as the SEC.

Hope the sound of your shilling doesn’t keep you awake at night.

Very well said! I’d like to hope Danielson will read it, but I don’t think he does a lot of football homework. In fact, I’m not sure that he’s shilling for the SEC (after all, Ingram’s in the SEC) as much as hawking Tebow so he won’t have to learn the names of anymore players. Hearing him call a four-quarter game is like hearing that scene in “Jaws” when Quint rakes his fingernails down the blackboard to get attention. In the beginning, you think you can handle it, but by the end you just want to Make It Stop!

    I hate the SEC.

Where is the criticism for all the ridiculous comments by Herbstreit for the Suckeyes and Holtz (Golden Homer) over the years at the WWL (alleged) ?

Where is Christian Ponder in all this???? He has better stats than any of these QB’s. Just because FSU has no defense shouldn’t punish him. It’s an individual award—not a team record award. Christian Ponder for Heisman!!!!!!!!! If Tebow wins this with much less stats than Ponder it just shows the heisman award is a joke.

Is the heisman award becoming another Nobel Peace Prize?
Why not vote for a player based on what goes on on the field each week? Evaluate his performance based on performance only(with his surrounding cast in mind)
I heard a sport commentator recently say in regards to Kace Keenum’s recent performance against Southern Mississippi–559 yds; 5TD’s…and a win; “The guy has XBOX type numbers”-
My response is “we can’t ignore stats can we?”
    In my view,
Keenum is the best quarterback in the country–
It is easy moving the ball down the field when you are surrounded by a bunch of “pro-bound” linemen and offensive weapons. But try going 43 of 53 for 5 touchdowns with a “mortal” group of sophmores against one of the better defensive teams in the country
Keenum should be considered seriously for the heisman–most valuable player for his team. Less than average defense-but consistently wins. May not be a movie star but look at his numbers–you can call it a system–I call it an accurate efficeint passer
the numbers speak for themselves–thrown the ball almost 400 times with 5 interceptions!!!!!—— and 25 touchdowns!!!!! if he played for Texas, OKlahoma –oh he would be a movie star!
If Tim Tebow or Colt McCoy played at the Univ of Houston; would Houston be in the top 25? I do not think so..
Now who is the best quarterback in the country—The Hollywood crowd is silenced!!!

Danielson is a joke to everyone who watches college football on TV. How CBS can continue to employ this gasbag is unfathomable. I have liked his broadcast partner, Verne Lundquist, since he was in local sports in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area many years ago, but even he has become a marionette for the SEC and UF in particular. Danielson and Thom Brennaman should be thrown in a small room with Tebow and they could engage in a 24 hour suckfest. You expect Holtz to love ND and Herbstreit to have a soft spot for OSt., but Danielson has become worse than a television evangelist.

It is because of people like Danielson that the heisman has become a joke. The media picks a player to tout all year and regardless of performance he is the frontrunner.
Tebow will have mediocre stats at the end of the year and has struggled in many games. If he wins it will be just another example of the heisman becoming a popularity contest fueled by the media. He will be nothing more than an average tight end in the pros. Quarterback…..hahahahahaha.
Heisman should be based on what a player does THIS year, not in past years. Compare Tebow’s stats to McCoys and you will clearly see who the better player is. Texas will stomp Florida in the NC game this year. Take that to the bank SEC

Sorry, Woodman. I don’t think Texas will stomp Florida. McCoy looked terrible against OU who just got beat by a very average Nebraska team. I’m a Big 12 guy, but the conference simply isn’t that good. Tebow hasn’t been great either. Give the heisman to anyone but one of them. Ingrim!

John– NBC=ND. How about the slant for Clausen.
I am not a fan of Gary and I do agree that everyone needs to sit back and let the season play out. The obvious choice will come out in a few weeks once the games have been played. However, your jab @ CBS shows you are protecting your employer and I am pretty sure you would rather your employer have a deal with the SEC rather than ND

  10. greg says: Nov 15, 2009 8:26 PM

Ok–just went over the statistics again
Best quarterback in the country? Hands down
    Kace Keenum–The stats don’t lie–people do.
    The performance is mind blowing-completion 70 %, TD/intercept ratio!!!, quarterback rating,…
    Look for yourself–Pro-bowl numbers
    Forget the Heisman
The heisman is still a high school popularity contest.
But he is still the best quarterback in the country
    The statistics speak….
So does hollywood.. The heisman will stay the “hipe” award driven by the celebrity watch media crowd
