Rutgers and Army will be the first college teams to square off in the new Meadowlands stadium set to open in 2010, Scarlet Knights athletic director Tim Pernetti announced in a press release.
The game is scheduled to be played on Oct. 16.
“This is a tremendous opportunity for Rutgers and we are thankful to our friends at the New Meadowlands Stadium Corporation, along with the Jets and Giants for their partnership,” Pernetti said in a statement. “We have witnessed first-hand the construction of the New Meadowlands Stadium and we are looking forward to competing during the inaugural season at the state-of-the-art facility.”
This announcement comes a couple of months after it was revealed that the 2011 Rutgers-Army game would be played at the new Yankee Stadium.
“I think Army-Rutgers has always been New York’s two teams,” head coach Greg Schiano said during his weekly press conference. “I just think it’s good for tri-state football.”
In an interesting twist, it was Rutgers that collegiately christened the old Meadowlands back in 1976.
