Rutgers-Army to break in new Meadowlands stadium

Rutgers and Army will be the first college teams to square off in the new Meadowlands stadium set to open in 2010, Scarlet Knights athletic director Tim Pernetti announced in a press release.

The game is scheduled to be played on Oct. 16.

This is a tremendous opportunity for Rutgers and we are thankful to our friends at the New Meadowlands Stadium Corporation, along with the Jets and Giants for their partnership,” Pernetti said in a statement. “We have witnessed first-hand the construction of the New Meadowlands Stadium and we are looking forward to competing during the inaugural season at the state-of-the-art facility.”

This announcement comes a couple of months after it was revealed that the 2011 Rutgers-Army game would be played at the new Yankee Stadium.

“I think Army-Rutgers has always been New York’s two teams,” head coach Greg Schiano said during his weekly press conference. “I just think it’s good for tri-state football.”

In an interesting twist, it was Rutgers that collegiately christened the old Meadowlands back in 1976.
