Noles lose Ponder for rest of '09

Already suffering through one of the worst seasons in Bobby Bowden's time in Tallahassee, Florida State now has to deal with the loss of their starting quarterback for the rest of 2009.  If not longer.

According to the Tallahassee Democrat, Christian Ponder will undergo season-ending surgery on his injured right (throwing) shoulder.  The surgery will be performed at some point in the next two weeks, Bowden said.

Ponder suffered what the Democrat calls a Grade 3 separation of the shoulder during the loss to Clemson Saturday.

FSU had already announced yesterday that freshman E.J. Manuel would start this weekend's game with Wake Forest.

What this means for Ponder's future is uncertain.  Bowden said earlier this month that he thought the junior was leaning toward coming back to the 'Noles "no matter what", while the quarterback indicated later that he would seriously consider making a jump to the NFL after the season.

Given this injury, and the precedent set by Sam Bradford's own season-ending injury after deciding to return to school for another year, Ponder may now give the NFL even more serious consideration than originally thought.

Kid had a rough night against Clemson and it's sad that his season ends like this.
