Trojans could lose leading receiver

A high-ankle sprain has left the availability of wide receiver Damian Williams up in the air, Southern Cal coach Pete Carroll said.

Williams suffered the injury in the win over Arizona State, and Carroll said he wasn't sure how long the receiver will be out.

The junior leads the Trojans with 45 receptions, 688 yards and five touchdowns.

High ankle sprains could result from immobilizing the ankle by excessive tape. Kareem Abdul Jabbar never taped his ankles believing that immobilizing the joint would just cause additional stress on adjacent structures. He never suffered any ankle problems in his very long career. I believe Gary Payton experienced the same results. It is interesting that "high ankle sprains" were extremely rare prior to trainers taking it upon themselves to put yards of tape on ankles to "reinforce" the joint. This practice needs some further study!
