Surgery knocks Stanzi out for rest of regular season

Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi underwent regular season-ending surgery recently and will miss the final two games of the year, head coach Kirk Ferentz said today.

Stanzi suffered an ankle injury in the first half of Iowa's first loss of the season Saturday.  It was originally thought that he would miss at least this weekend's game, but further testing revealed the true extent of the injury.

Ferentz did say that there is a ''good chance'' Stanzi could return for a bowl game.

The junior will be replaced in the starting lineup by redshirt freshman James Vandenberg.

Stanzi was the concrete leader of the Iowa Hawkeyes his unfortunate injury is painful for all Iowa Hawkeye fans!!!! Are two losses ahead for us without Stanzi? well that is yet to be seen and will depend if the freshman can step up to the challange!

I am not a huge Stanzi fan, but he is a strong confident leader that keep his head under pressure. He will be missed for these reasons. But, it is time to suck it up and rally around Vandenberg. We have been here before. We are Hawkeyes and have blood on our feathers, but together we fly.

The Hawkeyes have a chance as long as they remember who they are: Hawkeyes are about running, defense, special teams and praying to god the quarterback can hit the occasional play action pass.
