Spurrier dismisses retirement talk

Those rumors that have been bubbling up in and around Columbia that Steve Spurrier may walk away at the end of the year?

Forget about them.  At least for now.

The South Carolina head coach attempted to shoot down any quitting talk, saying that he's looking forward to coaching his incoming recruits as well as seeing how some of his younger players progress.

He did allow, though, that if the Gamecocks continue to be a fair-to-middlin' program, it might be time to hand the reigns to someone else.

"I hope and plan to go three or four more years," Spurrier said. "Certainly if we're going 6-6 or 7-5 (in three or four years), someone else should certainly have the opportunity to coach

"We'll see what happens... But we'll have some (recruits) come that I'm really looking forward to coaching. I'm looking forward to watching Alshon Jeffery, Stephon Gilmore. We've really got some good, young guys here that have a chance to have some big-time careers here."

Spurrier's current contract with the school runs through the 2012 season.  As noted by The State newspaper, Spurrier can retire at any point during his contract without owing the school a buyout.

His record with the Gamecocks, including this season, is 34-26.  In SEC play, Spurrier's mark is 18-21, and his best finish in the East was a second place in his first season in 2005.

Is it just me or is the college football fanbase waiting for this nut to go away?
