The coach of the No. 7 team in the country said Tuesday that there are so many good teams on relatively equal footing that the only equitable way to decide a national champion is a playoff.
''There needs to be a playoff," Johnson said succinctly. "There's so much parity in football that on a given day, you could make a case for whoever."
At a Macon Touchdown Club meeting last month, the coach talked playoff at the gathering, telling those in attendance that the only way to get a playoff system in place of the current BcS system is to continue applying pressure on the powers currently in charge.
"If fans and everybody involved keep pushing for a playoff," Johnson said Oct. 19, "then eventually, we're going to get one."
Hopefully, more and more coaches will continue to publicly show their support for a playoff, and pressure will continue to be applied by Congress and other powerful entities on the current system.
Like Johnson said, if the push continues, eventually we'll get what the vast majority of the fans of this great game want.
Eventually.
Most college teams only have 2-3 really difficult games per regular season. If you add a playoff system, how many teams make it? 8? That's 4 additional ROUGH games for those players. Which means wear-and-tear and injuries to young pro prospects.
The current system provides controversy and mystery around who is really the best. This keeps more teams looking good, and more players healthy.
Save the playoffs for the Pros.

Not quite. If eight teams make it, it's only an additional three games at most, and that's only for the two teams that make it to the championship game. Count the bowl game that they would have all been in to begin with, and it's only two games at most.
Losers of the first round of eight, four teams - One extra game for all minus the one extra game they would have without a playoff (their bowl game). Net: Nothing additional.
Losers of the second round of four, two teams - Two additional games minus the one extra game they would have without a playoff . Net: One additional game.
Two final teams in the championship game: Three additional games minus the one extra game they would have without a playoff . Net: Two additional games.
