Eight-figure buyout won't play into Weis decision

With the 27-22 loss to Pittsburgh, it's eight consecutive losses to Top-10 teams, the longest streak in the school's storied history.

A 1-8 record against ranked teams since 2006.

The same record as Bob Davies, the same winning percentage as the man he replaced, Tyrone Willingham.

Suffice to say, the seat underneath Charlie Weis at Notre Dame is as hot as it's ever been.  And athletic director Jack Swarbrick is doing nothing to turn the thermostat down on his beleaguered head coach.

Speaking to Matt Hayes of the Sporting News, Swarbrick was asked if Weis' $18 million buyout would factor into his fate at the school.  The AD's reply?

"No."

Swarbrick also refused to give Weis a vote of confidence in the midst of yet another disappointing season.

"I evaluate programs at the end of the season.  I don't evaluate coaches, I evaluate programs," Swarbrick said.

Semantics aside, the heat is certainly on Weis to a degree unseen during his four-plus seasons in South Bend.  The Irish are currently 6-4, with two games remaining, including a road date with the Stanford Cardinal.

The same Cardinal that just waxed Southern Cal 55-21 on the road.

At this point in time, a 7-5 regular season certainly seems to be a best-case scenario for the Irish, and the worst case for Weis' future at the school.  A future that, with each passing weekend, seems to be coming to an end very, very quickly.

$18 million is chump change for these football factories.

Meanwhile the players get diddly squat.

Get free tuition, if they choose not to take advantage of it and go back to the 'hood when they are done playing and don't make the NFL... so be it.

How the hell does he still have a $18 million buyout after 4 years?

I think you're a little short on the $18 million figure - have you considered everything beyond the buyout figure?

I heard earlier in the week that the number was closer to $31-33 million.

Who's right Taylor? Now that your machine is working again - tell us the real "meat and potatoes" of the Irish dumping Charlie. How much will they have to pay a quality replacement? Gruden would demand a Weis like contract so $18 mill plus $18 mill is $36 million right there.

Jon and Charlie just need to trade jobs and all will be right with the Irish again - LMAO.

Nevermind the fact they get the free education at expensive colleges where they are treated like gods, how much could they really pay a CFB player?

No, really. It couldn't be more than 200-300 dollars a week. This is legally of course, not including kick-backs like USC or anything.

*The overall number would have to be low because every school would have to pay out the same amount per week. The huge schools would have to have the same pay as the smaller schools. A Delaware couldn't afford the thousands per week a Florida could, but if you allowed a sliding pay-scale based on school size then you open up a can of worms that could kill CFB. The only thing I could see is the different overall divisions had different pay. I's made more than II's ect.

*Corruption. People are either incredibly naive or fools if they think some of these college players aren't already making a killing playing ball. The moment you allow someone to legally put cash into their hands, you increase the ease for people to break the rules and give some teams or players more than their fair share and scandals will rock and tarnish CFB unless each team has an outside source policing them every step of the way. Sounds like a huge hassle.

*Only CFB? Ok, I'm not even going to try to say Soccer, Baseball, or even the damn Lacross team makes as much money for the schools as CFB, but it you open up a pay scale for one activity that brings up mola to the school, doesn't that mean you have to pay everyone that brings in cash to the school. That's a fuzzy area there, and what happens when you have a quarter of the school not only getting to go for free, but going for free plus a weekly paycheck while other portions of the school are having to flip pizzas or rely on parents and eek by, with the other slice of course being carried by the silver spoon of bloodlines. Sounds like it could cause tensions among campuses and lead to a 'Why don't I get paid too? My contribution to this institution isn't worth such and such?'

But everything _is_ right with the irish. They suck and their losing.

Canning Charlie would be a huge mistake. The Irish need to address the offensive line can't pass protect or open lanes for the running game, defensive line can't stop the run or pressure the QB, The Irish are finally bringing in talent and sre not that far away from competing with the elite programs. Do feel the coaching staff needs to be tweaked in certain areas. Fire Weiss we will lose our recuriting class plus chances are very good that Tate and Clausen will enter the NFL Draft. We will be looking at another rebuiding effort and who says the new coach will be able to recurit as ggod as Charlie..

It's so difficult feeling sorry for ND or fat@ss Weis as they fry on their self-made hot seat. The law of karma is finally catching up on college football's most privileged program. The Irish have been receiving preferential treatment from polls, bowl committees and TV networks forever. Why?? $$$$.

When you think about in comic strip terms, it may be to Weis' benefit if the long term heat could melt at least 100 lbs from his obscenely obese torso. His knees could be heard celebrating. Actually, most Irish fans are probably hoping that all 350 lbs. disappear. If you consider that Ty Willingham's "poor" recruits produced 19 wins during his first two seasons, Weis' 35-25 record pales when compared to similar records of Ty and Bob Davies.

His NFL reputation dazzled those dummy decision makers under the golden dome into their inane 10 year contract. After five years to prove or disprove their error, it's a fact. Ergo, take one of the most famous TV ads of all time and say "Sorry Charlie!"

Smokey, do you really believe that Weis will do better next year? We have been hearing the same thing for three years now, things will get better. The kids are poorly prepared, poorly desciplined, and have poor fundamentals. It's all coaching. Take a look at what Ara P and Lou H did, and it didn't take 5 years either.

    Can Charlie the Tuna.
