Poke in the chest led to Mangino probe

Citing unnamed sources, the Wichita Eagle is reporting that head coach Mark Mangino

Local newspapers are also starting to pile on Mangino, which is never a good sign for the long-term health of a head coach’s career. The Lawrence Journal-World has published a lengthy piece about Mangino allegedly berating a student parking employee in 2007 after receiving the last in a series of parking tickets.

Amongst the accusations contained in the Journal-World report came from the director of KU Parking and Transit, who claimed in an email at the time that Mangino “screamed, yelled and cussed for a while and then got out of his car and screamed, yelled and cussed 6 inches from the student’s face.”

Not only are the locals going after Mangino’s anger issues in the midst of a five-game losing streak, they are also pinning those issues on the coach’s weight.

Jason Whitlock of the Kansas City Star says that this latest incident “should be... the end for Mark Mangino‘s head-coaching career at Kansas” and that “his inability to deal with his weight problem is the cause.”

Given how the last 24 hours have played out, it’s hard to believe it’s been less than two years since the Jayhawks’ stunning 12-1 season and an Orange Bowl win.

And it’s also hard to believe that Mangino will see the 2010 season as head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks.
