How does the old axiom go, nothing says college football Saturdays like cool weather, changing leaves and a bunch of racist xenophobes wearing white hoods protesting on campus? Or something like that, I think.
Anyway, the Mississippi White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan plan to stage a protest on the Ole Miss campus to show their disapproval of Houston Nutt’s offensive philosophy the university’s decision to remove “From Dixie with Love” from the Ole Miss band’s song selection.
Students were warned that their continuing the traditional chant of “the South will rise again” during the song would result in the song being barred from the game-day experience. The students continued the chant, and the song was removed from the band’s rotation.
And that decision has the great titan of the Mississippi chapter of the KKK more upset than when he witnesses an interracial marriage ceremony a Jevan Snead pick late in the fourth quarter of a close game.
“We are coming to Ole Miss to say enough is enough on attacking our Christian, southern heritage and culture, and it’s time for every person to have a right to freedom of speech,” Shane “Billy Joe Jim Bob” Tate said according to the LSU student newspaper.
“We aren’t coming there to cause problems or cause trouble. Trouble has already been caused by a handful at Ole Miss, including the black student body president, who wants to shape Ole Miss into yet another liberal sodomite college.”
On the plus side, it’ll be the closest any of the protesters or their families get to college, so they have that going for them. Which is good.
On the down side, this is way more attention than any of those individuals deserve, so I’ll just end this right here.
When the university made this announcement, a number of students objected that this was about tradition, not racism.
Now would be the time for them to take a good long look at who has come out in support of the chant, and ask yourself: when the KKK’s on your side, do you still believe there’s no racism here?
Overratedgators, you provide a great point, though perhaps not the one you intended. The issues about whether this is “heritage, not hate” are fertile grounds for legitimate, intelligent debate, but when inhuman offal like the Klan chimes in, sudden the well is poisoned for sensible people to discuss the issue rationally. Not being an Ole Miss grad or supporter–nor for that matter someone who gets goosebumps whenever someone says “the South shall rise again”–I really don’t have a dog in this fight, but it’s sad that this whole thing devolves into a bitter name-calling contest because Klan gutter trash gets involved.
DCroz, you have just insulted all gutter trash.
Germans who yell “Heil Hitler” in 2009 are not anti-semetic, they are just traditional. What a joke. Ole Miss is a school where the school president proclaimed at halftime of a game in 1962 that OLE MISS would always be segregated. A long time ago but not really.
Why doesn’t someone put together a counter protest to drown the idiots out?
The KKK presence has to be good for recruiting, right? Aren’t most athletes caucasion these day? Wow, what a mess! I can’t believe Mr. Nutt is too excited that his recruits on official visits will bear witness to this BS.
Can you just report the story without your stupid unfunny jokes sprinkled in?
