Lou Holtz picks against Notre Dame ... kind of

What’s next? Rush Limbaugh going with the Dems? Stanford’s band to do some marching? Will the nation suddenly drop what it’s doing on Sunday night to watch the MLS Cup?

I dunno what it’ll be, but I’m getting ready.

Why?

Well . . . Lou Holtz just picked against Notre Dame.

This isn’t some kind of trick. We’re not talking about a church, opera or high school. We’re talking about the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team that hails from South Bend, Ind., which hosts Connecticut on Saturday.

The former head coach of the Golden Domers, well known for his absolute devotion to all things Notre Dame while serving as an ESPN college football studio analyst, did say that his selection was affected by a promise he made to someone that he’d pick UConn if the Irish lost to Pittsburgh last week, which, of course, they did.

But still . . . Holtz has found ways to weasel out of situations much tougher than that before, so this still counts as a minor sign of the apocalypse.

I also get the feeling he knows he’s got a better than average chance of being right and he’d be that much closer to having three coaches fail and get fired since he walked out on his contract with the Irish following the 1996 season.

For the record, Holtz said: “Connecticut has lost five games by a grand total of 15 points. I think that Coach (Randy) Edsell and his staff have done a tremendous job. I think they will play very, very well. And they can run the ball and they are physical.”

And since it wouldn’t be an official Holtz television appearance without some of his sloppy schtick, after deskmate Mark May picked the Irish and remarked that the Notre Dame seniors would play well in their final home game, Holtz said: “I’ve coached in the last game there and they don’t play well. The players have tears in their eyes, they have so many great memories, they can’t see who to block and tackle.”

At least they didn’t give us a rerun of Thursday night’s horrific “Dr. Lou” segment, featuring George Wendt.
