What's next? Rush Limbaugh going with the Dems? Stanford's band to do some marching? Will the nation suddenly drop what it's doing on Sunday night to watch the MLS Cup?
I dunno what it'll be, but I'm getting ready.
Why?
Well . . . Lou Holtz just picked against Notre Dame.
This isn't some kind of trick. We're not talking about a church, opera or high school. We're talking about the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team that hails from South Bend, Ind., which hosts Connecticut on Saturday.
The former head coach of the Golden Domers, well known for his absolute devotion to all things Notre Dame while serving as an ESPN college football studio analyst, did say that his selection was affected by a promise he made to someone that he'd pick UConn if the Irish lost to Pittsburgh last week, which, of course, they did.
But still . . . Holtz has found ways to weasel out of situations much tougher than that before, so this still counts as a minor sign of the apocalypse.
I also get the feeling he knows he's got a better than average chance of being right and he'd be that much closer to having three coaches fail and get fired since he walked out on his contract with the Irish following the 1996 season.
For the record, Holtz said: "Connecticut has lost five games by a grand total of 15 points. I think that Coach (Randy) Edsell and his staff have done a tremendous job. I think they will play very, very well. And they can run the ball and they are physical."
And since it wouldn't be an official Holtz television appearance without some of his sloppy schtick, after deskmate Mark May picked the Irish and remarked that the Notre Dame seniors would play well in their final home game, Holtz said: "I've coached in the last game there and they don't play well. The players have tears in their eyes, they have so many great memories, they can't see who to block and tackle."
At least they didn't give us a rerun of Thursday night's horrific "Dr. Lou" segment, featuring George Wendt.
when lou was coaching at notre dame, he always statedto the media that notre dame had zero chance against every notre dame opponent.
lou's pregame statements to the media usually resulted in wins by notre dame.
however, lou did not have to deal with the levels of dishonest officiating which now infect all of college football.
we will see if yet another officiating and tech review crew( this one from the big east conference) want to commit premeditated economic suicide on national tv, as 4 other crews which orchestrated notre dame's 4 phony losses already have done this season.
robertg as you've noticed i have been trying to convince that hardhead edgy to realyze there was a two year talent gap at notre i would like to say you are dead on about the officiating costing the irish a national championship maybe today the refs will be honest hope so
Lots of us wait for robertg's comments. It's always hard to interpret his code, but I think if you think to yourself "cheerleading" every time he refers to "officiating", you will understand the real reason Notre Dame loses. That and a defense that couldn't stop your grandmother's sandlot team.
barng, edgy is here and what excuses do you have to make for Weis NOW? 6-5 and on his way to 6-6 and depending on the bowl matchup, it could be 6-7. FIVE YEARS is enough -- there are no excuses left for him.......
Where are you at, barng? You were there defending Pope Charlie Faust II when they were 6-4 but now that they're 6-5, you're pretty silent......
