SEC refs throw another excessive flag

Southeastern Conference officials really have a problem judging acts of excessive celebration.

This much is clear, because it happened again in tonight’s LSU-Mississippi game.

Even though it wasn’t off-the-charts ridiculous like the time they inexplicably flagged Georgia wideout A.J. Green at a crucial moment in a 20-13 loss to LSU on Oct. 3, it was still a curious decision.

The play in question occurred on the Tigers’ first possession of the game, when Rebel senior cornerback Cassius Vaughn intercepted a Jordan Jefferson pass and returned it all the way to the end zone, punctuated by a dive to make sure he got in.

Ole Miss was flagged for two penalties on the play, one deservingly for a block in the back that meant there would be no touchdown. But, the second one, nailing Vaughn for “unsportsmanlike conduct” due to his dive, was … well … excessive.

Why can’t these SEC zebras let the players play?

When did Vince McMahon become the SEC Commissioner?

    1. This “article” is pointless. Totally pointless.
    2. These things don’t matter when you’re playing Les Miles, the dumbest coach in sports.

Because whoever is in charge of the SEC officiating is instructing them to call it that way. It’s not up to the officials.
The play was unsportsmanlike, it was penalized accordingly.
Here’s a hint, if you’re going to pretend to be journalists, try not making it so obvious you have an axe (or three) to grind.

    Hey CoffinOfChaos,
It obviously wasn’t so pointless that you felt the need to spend time telling the author how pointless it was. That speaks more to your insecurity than to the pointlessness of the article.

As the game wound to its end, LSU Coach Les Miles failed to call a timeout immediately after the third-down play and allowed about 14 seconds to tick off the clock. Because of that error, once they made the crucial first down, he didn’t have time to get his kicking unit on the field to kick the winning score. His lolly-gagging cost his team the game. And as time expired, he stood on the sidelines looking as though he just couldn’t figure out what went wrong. In all the years I’ve been an avid football fan, it was the stupidest coaching mistake I’ve ever seen.
And the only thing you’re commenting about in this game is an excessive celebration flag on the first possession???

    Hey Samh
So you don’t think a player should be allowed to dive into the endzone to prevent another player from tackling him?
I would agree with you if no player was within 10 yards of him but that was not the case, an LSU player had his hand on Vaughn when he dove across the goal line.
That is NOT an unsportsmanlike penalty.
God forbid the higher ranked team lose an SEC game

Um, Will, the higher-ranked team did lose the game. Grow up.

So seriously, when will the separate posting area for SEC fans be up and ready? For some reason, I can’t shake National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation from my mind right now.
