He will not step down as the Irish head coach.
Armed with 18 million reasons to eschew quitting and forcing a move by the university, Weis told the media this afternoon that his intentions are to stick it out to the bitter end.
"No, that's not happening," he said when asked if he would resign. "But ... if they decided to do something, could you understand that? I'm the head football coach. Who else is responsible? Now, I could sit there and try to blame everybody else, but who is -- ultimately, it falls on my shoulders. That's the way it is."
Weis also snidely insinuated that several close losses this season should be enough to give him and his staff another season, but seemed resigned to the fact that it likely wouldn't matter in the end.
"You know something, if they decide to make a change, OK, I'd have a tough time arguing with that, because 6-5 isn't good enough -- especially when you've lost five games by a touchdown or less.
"My intent is to be here. But if that were the rationale, I mean, it would be tough for me to argue with that point."
Bottom line? According to several Irish sources, Weis -- barring an unexpected change of heart by those in power -- will be officially excommunicated from the football program at a point shortly after the Stanford game.
At that point, the school will begin targeting in earnest their No. 1 choice to replace Weis -- Cincinnati head coach Brian Kelly.
Can't blame him for not resigning. He holds a lottery ticket worth $18 mil. Kevin White gave it to him willingly. No one forced ND to make the dumb move.
It will take that $18 mil and another $25 million to get ND back to the BSC championship game. It will take that to get Urban.
Calling all alumni, please send in a check, Father Jenkins needs your support.
Amen.
Heh, so he's saying he's just a touchdown or less away from 11-0?
Well, he's also a touchdown or less away from 2-9, with big wins against Nevada (8-3) and more recently, WashSt (1-10). Take that as you will...
Charlie's in a state of denial. The opponents have him figured out. He looks confused on the sideline, a kind of deer in the headlights look. Okay, here's the deal Charlie, meet with the AD, work out a graceful exit where you are paid what you are owed and resign. We all need closure to the drama.
ND fans, maybe you could ask some of the SEC teams to help you, I mean don't you think they would offer money to get Urban out of that division? I bet Saben alone would send a nice check.
As a Cincinnati alum I sure as hell hope they target Urban Meyer instead of Brian Kelly.
CW needs to be gone. However, this article is just false. When Charlie says in a press conference that he can't blame ND for making a change ESPECIALLY because of the close losses how do you say that he is using it as a reason he should come back. He never said he deserved another season, or even came close to implying it. GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT FOR ONCE!!!
if charlie and his staff do leave notre dame, charlie will not make any claim against notre dame, no matter what any contract states and what charlie's legal rights are.
charlie took the notre dame job, not for money, but because he loves what notre dame should stand for.
of course, those who want to use the resouces of msnbc and nbc sports to promote their own personal and fraudulent agendas will block this post.
we got the last crew that controlled content at nd central last season fired, although we have not yet sued any of them in the civil courts, but certainly will.
john taylor and pft, cft.
1. now that you have dud a deepp enough hole for yourselves, who is going to defend you in the coming civil lawsuits.
2. since, unlike keith arnold and his staff at nd central, you have breached your contracts with msnbc and nbc sports, they will not be providing attorneys to defend you.
3. how about that west virgina genius attorney mike florio, the founder and financier behind pft and cft?
4. if florio had only actually tried and won any real cases, instead of conning msnbc and nbc into the deal which brought pft and cft out of total internet obscurity and into public view and temporary prosperity, florio might be an option.
5. compared with you and your associates at pft and cft, charlie and his staff and notre dame are just in great shape.
6.we will see you and your associates in the civil courts and, because of the jurisdiction and venue laws which govern civil actions based on internet wrongdoings, we will not be getting hometowned in west virgina.
7.no doubt, florio forgot to tell you about thjese rules and guaranteed to protect you.
make certain that you get a 1st lien on florio's assets.
They should talk to Joe Paterno. Even if he dies in the next few years, he'll still be a better coach than Weis, and they could sign him to a shorter-term contract.
It's a helluva lot harder when you don't have forbidden film of the other teams signals, isn't it Charlie?
robertg,
I come to this board to see what you will be posting. You seem to have a blind spot when it comes to Notre Dame football.
Come on. I love Alabama football, but I knew that the death knell was tolling for Mike Shula. I wasn't so blind that I couldn't see that football coaches are hired to win football games. They are not hired to understand what the university is for.
Sure, Weis will just walk away from $18 million dollars because he loves what ND stands for. You just keep telling yourself that.
And don't even think about a vaguely threatening response to me. Your rambling posts don't scare me.
Tough to defend Weis after this latest loss. It was a tough game to watch because I love both teams (UConn is my alma mater).
Still, I want Charlie to be the coach next year. The reasoning is simple. I don't want the program thrown into turmoil by a major coaching change. It's been a disappointing couple of seasons, but its obvious that the problem is on the defensive side of the ball.
Don't get me wrong, there are coaches out there that would do a better overall job than Weis.
However, "By the Numbers" his replacement will fail. The chances of Notre Dame landing a coach that will turn the program around right away are slim. Meanwhile, the chances of Notre Dame landing a defensive-minded coach that can complement Charlie's offensive mind are much much better.
1 more season, for all the marbles.
Crazy
ND should keep Weis. Kelly would be a joke as a replacement. Unless they can get Meyer or possible Gruden (even with the new contract) then ND fails again. Maybe Stoops. Any of these other bums like Kelly, Patterson, Harbaugh, are just more of the same. Fire Weis and the rebuilding begins, w/o a good coach we are in the same boat 5 yrs from now.
Keep Weis for another year or 2 and hire Charlie Strong as the Defensive Coordinator.
robertg- Did you finish the Manifesto yet?
Evan, I just don't get you. There are so many examples of people turning a program around within a couple of years that it isn't even funny and most of them didn't have the hype that Weis did when he went to ND (Oh and weren't the people at Notre Dame declaring him a savior and genius when he took Ty's players and turned them into winners for his 1st two years -- which kind of kills your theory about no one being able to turn the program around right away, doesn't it?). He was given 5 years -- 2 longer than his predecessor - and was unable to put together a program that was nothing more than a bully, incapable of beating up anyone but the smaller children and losing every important game during that time. It's time for ND to bite the bullet and move on...
