Fortunately for Paul Wulff, it doesn't look like that abysmal record will result in losing a job. Yet.
According to the Washington State coach, athletic director Jim Sterk has been "very reassuring about what we've been doing" even in the midst of all the losing in the first two years of his tenure.
"(Sterk's) very excited about how much work we've done and moving forward. It's been outstanding," Wulff said. "As we move into next year you're going to see a hugely improved team, one of the most improved teams around. We've got all the ingredients to take a giant step as a team."
The football program has already taken a giant step under Wulff, although it was a giant step in the wrong direction record-wise. In the two year's prior to Wulff's arrival in Pullman, Washington State was 11-13.
Unfortunately Wulff was given a team with absolutely no talent and the worst recruiting job ever spread out over 4 years brought this team to it's knees in Wulff's first season.
It's going to be a 4 or more years process from the startup to get this team up to the PAC 10 level.
Bill Doba, I mean Dobber, couldn't keep this program going after Mike Price made a ridiculously stupid move by taking Alabama's job w/o signing a contract. He couldn't recruit and it brought this team's depth and overall talent to easily the worst in the PAC 10 his last couple of years.
They went from recruiting Subdivision athletes under Dobber and starting getting 3 star athletes under Wulff.
If WSU stays with Wulff over the long haul he can build this team into a consistent winner. Wulff isn't going to go anywhere anytime soon and Jim Sterk understands what Bill Doba did to this program. His firing was a mercy firing because Sterk wanted to get rid of him a few years back but couldn't because of the win over Texas and when he was finally removed the team was in the worst shape in years.
It's a major project that is going to take time. Sterk understands Wulff has to rebuild this team from top to bottom but also knows Wulff isn't using WSU as a stepping stone.
