Sources have indicated to the Los Angeles Daily News that Southern Cal’s leading receiver, Damien Williams, will likely be doubtful for the Trojans’ game this weekend with UCLA with an ankle injury.
At least publicly, however, the coaching staff is whistling a decidedly more optimistic tune.
Wide receivers coach Johnnie Morton said that the junior “did some stuff” Monday and that he “felt pretty good.”
Head coach Pete Carroll said the fact that Williams is a veteran could allow him to return even if he’s not 100 percent physically.
“I think he’s the kind of guy that will find a way,” USC coach Pete Carroll said. “He’s going to try. He’ll find out how to adapt. He did it with a hamstring strain a couple weeks ago when he shouldn’t have played.”
In addition to being USC’s leading receiver with 45 receptions and 688 yards, Williams is also the team’s top punt returner.
