Unfortunately for Hawkins, the chancellor's own office is debunking that report.
According to the Denver Post, a spokesperson for chancellor Phil DiStefano confirmed the meeting but denied that any decision on Hawkins' future at the school had been made.
"It was a review to review the season and have a frank discussion," Bronson Hilliard said. "I don't want to characterize the outcome as an endorsement of the coach. It's certainly (athletic director) Mike Bohn's decision."
"We don't have a tradition here of the chancellor of the university playing kingmaker on those kind of decisions. (Bohn) will keep the chancellor appropriately abreast of the situation. He hasn't had a face-to-face with the coach and he hasn't had a face-to-face with the chancellor. There are two meetings to go before any determination is made on coach Hawkins' future."
Rumors have abounded that Hawkins is safe through at least the 2010 season, if for nothing more than the fact that his $3 million buyout is prohibitive at best in this economic climate at best, while still other talk says that Hawkins will be gone irrespective of the buyout.
Bohn and Hawkins are expected to meet shortly after the end of the 2009 season, at which point Hawkins' fate will be determined.
He's very safe by default, not by choice. They can't afford to buy him out and pay a decent replacement. If they try, it will only get worse for the black and gold.
The CU Pres and AD both assured this program was decimated and decrepit during the Barnett debacle. They couldn’t have done a better job if hired as the Athletic program hit squad. Frankly, it may never recover.
