Swinney looking at an amended contract

Eight wins thus far, a No. 15 AP ranking and a date with Georgia Tech in the ACC championship game.  Those are the superlatives from Dabo Swinney's first season at Clemson.

They're also the figures that figure to lead Swinney to an "amended" contract following the end of the 2009 season, and athletic director Terry Don Phillips has already hinted as much according to the Charleston Post & Courier.

"We are not in negotiations (Swinney's) got his team on his mind," Phillips said. "At the appropriate time everybody will turn their attention to that area."

Swinney's contract currently runs through the 2013 season, and contains no buyout clause.  That could serve to make Swinney attractive to schools looking for a new coach, so Clemson is looking to be proactive -- and creative -- in ensuring they keep their current coach happy.

Swinney has longevity bonuses written into his contract that he would forfeit should he leave the school  for another job, which Phillips believes is a bigger incentive to stay than the deterrence represented by buyouts.

"We've already seen this with other coaches," Phillips said. "If another university with deep pockets wants to come in and hire someone they are going to take care of [the buyout].

"You want to have a carrot. And the carrot would be very attractive, long-term and good for your family. In my opinion (the longevity fund) is a better way to approach than have a buyout."

Good, I've always loved his enthusiasm during games and he has already proven himself to be better than that bum Bowden, who could recruit but nothing else.
