Ingram taking huge Heisman hit?

After three quarters of play, Alabama running back Mark Ingram -- the presumed front runner in the race for the 2009 Heisman -- has exactly 31 reasons why he may have fallen back to the pack of stiff-armed trophy candidates.

Not only is his unbeaten and No. 2 team in the nation trailing 21-20 to Auburn, but Ingram has been held to a scant 31 yards on 15 carries by the Tigers defense.

Given Colt McCoy's huge performance on a national stage last night, Ingram may have to make a serious rally in the fourth quarter to stay at the top of the Heisman heap.

And to keep his Tide team square in the middle of the hunt for the BcS crystal.

    Screw the Heisman. It would have been nice, but wins are all that matter.

    Alabama doesn't win Heismans, they win championships.

    bbq...correction, the 'won' championships. 17 years sans a nation title is a long time. You are over a decade sans an SEC title.

    There is only one fan base that likes to talk about ancient history more than ND and that would be Bama.

    You guys may escape today, but you will be hammered again in the title game.

    i cant stand florida but seeing some of these comments i've seen today, i hope the gators blow alabama out.

    @gator_prof ...

    At least we only count championships we've actually won, not those we arrogantly ASSume we're going to win.

    And we've won 12.

    It's a long and storied history, that certainly trumps three.

    Neither of us has any idea what will happen in that title game. But at least Bama fans have the grace to wait and let their team do its speaking on the field.

    Re your professorship: I didn't realize Florida went so far as to provide majors in pomposity.

    SEC championship a blowout? They can't play offense to save themselves. Fla 14 -7

    @HBOilers24 ...

    The ridiculous comment on the other thread about Auburn's trick play making them scared and chickens**t came from ONE guy, as did the followups. So if that one guy has made you hope the Gators blow us out, then I doubt you have the animosity toward Florida that you claim. All teams have their share of obnoxious fans.

    I thought Auburn's play-calling for most of the game, particularly their targeting of Ingram, was brilliant. They're our chief rivals and did everything possible to act as spoilers for the team and for Ingram. That's EXACTLY what chief rivals should do. Kudos to them. I'm just thankful they didn't succeed in spoiling our undefeated season and hope they didn't do too much damage to Ingram's Heisman bid even though I value championships more than individual honors. Now we look forward to next week.

    Deb is right, all those comments you're referring to were me. I still think it was kind of a crappy move, but I do understand why it was done.

    Also, I'll admit that not only do my feelings about the onside kick come from the fact that it worked and scared the shit out of me, but that I probably would have applauded it had the roles been reversed (Alabama being the major underdog). And so goes the life of a passionate sports fan... am I right?

    Auburn's defense also hit us in the mouth, especially our running game. It was a well played game on their part, and I can most definitely respect that. This Iron Bowl was one for the ages.

    Deb is also right about the fact that Alabama has 12 national championships. I'm pretty sure that's something I'm allowed to be proud of. Also, the most bowl appearances and victories. It's a great tradition. That's why we talk about it.

    I don't know what's gonna happen in the SEC Championship game. What I do know is that last year's was an awesome game, and I'm expecting this year's to be as well. #1 vs. #2 in the SEC Championship for the second year in a row? Are you kidding me? Doesn't get much better than that.

    What's for sure is that it's gonna be a couple of damn good teams going toe-to-toe, and either team has a good chance of taking it. I know I'm damn nervous.

  8. Deb says: November 27, 2009 8:58 PM ET

    @bbq ...

    Sorry I kinda threw you under the bus. I did think Auburn played a brilliant game--and they scared the crap out of me, too. But hey, calling Auburn names is all part of the tradition. Guaranteed, they're calling us some doozies tonight. LOL

    And you're right about the Heisman. I wouldn't trade one of the 12 championships for a Heisman, but teams whose players have won Heismans without winning championships would gladly trade places with us! Roll Tide!!

  9. gator_prof says: November 27, 2009 10:07 PM ET

    Deb,

    How many of those 12 have you been alive for? Better yet, how many where you able to watch on TV?

    Like I said, the only thing worse than a ND fan is a Bama fan when it comes to digging up ancient history.

    Yes, you have 12 titles...

    Pre-integration titles (8): 1925, 1926, 1930, 1934, 1941, 1961, 1964, and 1965

    You have 3 more that are at least 30 years ago, 1973, 1978, and 1979

    Basically, you have 1 title in the last 29 years...1992. This is almost as bad at ND who last won it in 1988.

    So, let me see if I have this correct. It has been 10 years since your last SEC title and 17 since your last national title.

    Pomposity is an ironic word coming from a Bama fan.

    My favorite recent Bama moment: 'Roll Tide!' and he was yelling back, 'It's rolling, baby, it's rolling.'

  10. Deb says: November 27, 2009 10:42 PM ET

    @gator_prof ...

    I celebrate the nation's independence every July 4th even though I wasn't around in 1776, too--and you probably do as well. When your team has history and tradition, you take pride in that. You'd understand if your team had any.

    Pomposity is an ass who celebrates wins of games that haven't been played. Florida may well win the SEC championship. If so, I'll congratulate the fans and take the loss with grace--a term clearly foreign to you.

  11. gator_prof says: November 27, 2009 11:13 PM ET

    We do have history, but it is recent, you know, like 2/3 years winning the national title. Danny's title in 96 seems like ancient history to Gator fans. It is nice, but we don't need to dwell on the past like the tide.

    Rome was great once upon a time, then it fell.

  12. Deb says: November 27, 2009 11:51 PM ET

    Yes and Pope Urban will fall, too. Then one day you'll be an old man reliving the glory days of your two puny championships (since Danny's has no meaning for you) ... no history ... no tradition ... just the rantings of a sad and graceless little twit.

    The clock is ticking.

  13. bbq says: November 28, 2009 2:54 AM ET

    @ Deb:

    It's perfectly OK. I was being obnoxious making all those comments, but I knew that.

    @ gator_prof:

    First of all, I'd like to point out the fact that the NCAA officially gives Alabama credit for 16 national titles. We only recognize the 12, though.

    Second, are you honestly telling me that years down the road, when Tebow is long gone and Florida hasn't won the big one in a while, that you will be quiet and ignore the fact that the Gators fielded great (and yes, they were great) national championship teams in the early 2000s? No, you won't.

    You will look back at the glory days and be proud of those titles, which were some of the first in the BCS era of college football. And, as a true fan, you should be proud... your team is creating a nice tradition for itself. Don't hate just because, as great as the Gators have been the past few years, you're still playing catchup with the likes of Notre Dame, USC, and Alabama.

    Keep your chin up. Maybe your team will be mentioned in that conversation some day.

  14. Pier588 says: November 28, 2009 7:53 AM ET

    We'll get a chance to see how good of a coach Urban Meyer really is next season - either with a lain to waste Noter Dame program or a rebuilding Gator team without St Timothy.

    As for 'Bama - its just about time for Saben to be dumping the Tide for greener pastures some place else. I would be LMAO if he ended up with the Irish job. "Bama is ripe for dissing (again) by a coach seeking "a better situation" for himself and his family. Better hope Mrs Saben is a true Tide believer with enough shopping malls close by or he'll be dumping them like the Miami Dolphins to make her happy.

  15. Deb says: November 28, 2009 11:16 AM ET

    @Pier588 ...

    Have it on very good authority that both Nick and Mrs. Saban are very happy. He won't be going anywhere for a while and I wouldn't be surprised if he retired at Bama.

  16. bbq says: November 28, 2009 11:53 AM ET

    Yeah, I would be lying if I said I hadn't thought about the possibility of Saban ditching us like he did LSU and the Miami Dolphins. But he just signed an extension, so that kind of tells me that he likes it here and wants to keep it up.

    I have my fingers crossed, anyway, because I don't think I've ever seen a college football coach turn a team around so quickly.

  17. Texansghost says: November 28, 2009 11:54 AM ET

    It is funny that all of y'all are arguing the championship but seem to forget you still have a big set of Longhorns in your way!!! Most winningest college football QB & future Heisman winner Colt McCoy and WR Shipley are on their way and will be waiting for one of y'all to come on out!!!!!

  18. Deb says: November 28, 2009 12:25 PM ET

    @Texansghost ...

    We're arguing SEC championship. No way I'm forgetting the Longhorns! Great game against A&M. And to quote Butch Cassidy before the knife fight:

    Harvey Logan to Sundance:
    "Sundance, when we're done, and he's dead, you're welcome to stay."
    Butch whispering to Sundance: "Listen, I don't mean to be a sore loser, but when it's done, if I'm dead, kill him."

    When we're done, if Bama falls, kill 'em.

    If we're still standing, see ya in the National Championship (assuming, of course, you win the Big 12).
