Odds have Weis headed back to NFL

At some point next week, Charlie Weis will -- likely -- receive official confirmation that he's no longer the head coach at Notre Dame.

While the most important question is who will replace Weis, there's a secondary question that would need to be answered as well.  Would Weis remain in the college game or head back to the NFL, where he plied his craft well enough -- and was fortuitous enough to be around for a certain sixth-round pick to blossom into a Hall of Fame quarterback -- to gain the Irish job in the first place.

There was a report last week that Weis could be headed to the Kansas City Chiefs because, one, they currently have no offensive coordinator and, two, the relationship between Weis and new Chiefs executive Scott Pioli from their days in New England together.

Perhaps in part based on that report, Bodog.com has released their odds of just where Weis will end up in 2010, and "return to the NFL as a coordinator" is the current leader in the clubhouse as far as gamblers are concerned.

NFL Coordinator 1/1
NCAA Division 1 Head Coach 9/5
NCAA Division 2 or lower Head Coach 4/1
NCAA Division 1 Coordinator 4/1
NCAA Division 2 or lower Coordinator 15/1
NFL Head Coach 20/1

One other option to consider, though, is whether or not Weis will even want to coach again next year if he is indeed fired.  Given the fact that his rumored buyout would be in the neighborhood of $18 million, could you blame the man for sitting on that pile of cash instead of immediately jumping into another job?

All I know is, if I'm in that neighborhood, I'm not going anywhere but the golf course and the beer joint.  But not necessarily in that order.

Sometimes it's hard for a head coach to return to their coordinating roots, even if it is what's best for them.
I think that Charlie will be a head coach next year at a college team. It may not be a big name school like LSU, or Michigan, but a school that is trying to break into the top tier of their league. He could easily become the next head coach at a school similar to Colorado, Texas Tech, or Arizona State. A school that is not quite at the top of the league, but a year or two away from becoming in the top of their league.
It's not that he is an excellent coach, but the boosters of such school would be falling over themselves to get a former Notre Dame coach, that in itself commands a little respect. Not from me, I don't give a flip about Notre Dame, but there are a lot of people that do.
I don't see him returning to the NFL, especially with all the problems that Belichecks former assistants are all having right now. (How many of Belichecks former assitants have a winning record?)

john taylor and cft and pft,
of course, charlie weis always has had numerous nfl offers open.
after all, in the nfl, officials are closely monitored and cannot get away with the ripoffs that refs do working for the college conferences.
if charlie does leave notre dame, charlie will stay in the nfl, where the officials are honest.
if jack swarbrick and father jenkins have half a brain collectively, charlie and his staff will be back at notre dame for the long term and will flourish under next season's 21st century high tech transparent and honest college football officiating, rules enforcement and rankings systems, you jerks will be broke on the streets.

I'm sure Weis's stomach is growling at the thought of working in Baton Rouge, but even though the Tigers have underperformed this year, I'd be surprised if Skippy B sent the The Hat packing. Besides, LSU doesn't have a history of hiring big names--they become big names after winning the BCS at LSU.

If The Hat left, I bet Charlie Strong would be on the list, but considering it's Louisiana, Charlie has one thing going against him.

robertg - if you "had 1/2 a brain collectively" you'd realize that posting your drivel in this forum is not well received.

Your DUMBA$$ perspective coupled with the idiotic words you use to express yourself clearly indicate you are drunk on Noter Dame kool-aid.

I hope they revoke your weekend pass from the Asylum soon.

Weis is even money to head to reality TV...he'd be a shoo in for The Biggest Loser.
