Yesterday, CBS Sports analyst/insider Tony Barnhart reported that the hot rumor making the rounds was that Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops could have “an audience” with Notre Dame about their soon-to-be-open head-coaching job.
Barnhart’s on-air report went to far as to suggest that a sit-down could happen as early as today.
According to Tulsa World, Stoops has denied the report. For the most part.
The paper asked Stoops to either confirm or deny Barnhart’s speculation, and the Sooners coach responded via text message.
“On the record, I am not (interviewing). First I’ve heard of this (rumor).”
A cynic would say that Stoops didn’t deny any type of interest in the job at all, or that he didn’t state that an interview would never take place. Thank goodness we are not cynics.
It still seems, from our view, that it would be highly unlikely that Stoops would take a step down — and that’s what it would be right now — to go from Norman to South Bend. Also something that should be considered is the fact that Notre Dame still, at least technically, does not have an opening, and Stoops likely doesn’t want to step on any coach’s toes and break any type of coaching credo.
Still, there’s just so much smoke coming from credible sources that it seems as if Stoops is at least possibly, maybe thinking about the opening. And contemplating the Irish door that is most certainly open to him if/when he wants to walk through it.
This CAN’T possibly be true. We KNOW that they’ll never fire Weis. :^
Stoops, of course is lying. robertg and I have a good handle on the situation. It’s possible that Weis is looking at him as an assistant for next year.
To me usually when someone says, “on the record” that usually means there is an off the record. I am left to wonder what that comment would be.
John, can you get the tech guys on some kind of comment-following tool? I want to know what robertg says the second he says it.
@ Aequitas: there is an RSS feed for comments, which I heartily recommend. And I believe the NBC tech guys — in conjunction with the FBI, NASA, CIA and NSA — are hard at work on a robertg translator/algorithm, so they might be too busy to pump out a specific feed for his comments at this point in time.
Wies is going to eat Stoops.
Stoops and Saban. Some method.
I feel bad for the Irish if Stoops is hired. What a flat choice to keep the program in pain for another 2-3 years.
UGH.
Why would you say that? He’s already proven that he can take an unproven QB and an inexperienced OL and turn in a winning season. He would be able to put together a good staff and while he would most likely lose his DC to OU as his replacement, he would still bring in someone better than what they’ve had under Weis. Certainly, his players would be much better FUNDAMENTALLY than Charlie’s (I mean, they can’t tackle to save their lives). That being said, I think he’ll stay with Oklahoma because his team will be better and Texas and Oklahoma State will be hurting from their losses.
