For at least the third time this month, Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops has denied that he will be the next head coach at Notre Dame.
It was also his strongest denial yet, and it came on the same day that the job came open as Charlie Weis was officially ousted as the Irish coach.
“What I am saying is I am going to be at Oklahoma next year, so I can’t be in two places at once,” Stoops said Monday in a conference call with beat writers. “I can’t help what is said. But in the end, I couldn’t be more excited and pleased about what we are doing here and what the future holds.”
Of course, Nick Saban ruined it for every future coach by denying any interest in the Alabama job and now nothing one of them says about remaining in their current job can be taken without at least a little grain of salt, but this latest debunking seems — seems — to close the door on the Stoops-to-South Bend rumors.
But, of course, it likely won’t, so we’ll just sit back and wait for the next round of rumors involving the Sooners coach to commence.
The first few days of January are technically “next year.” Maybe Bobby was a lawyer in his past life.
Anyhow, please take this ND job so we don’t face the prospect of Stoops @ OSU when Tressel retires.
Who cares about denials. Can someone name a time for me when a current head coach with the full support of his employer, ever uttered the words,
“I know your all wondering if I’m considering the new opening at such and such university. I’d like to emphatically say here and now, once and for all……..of course I am, do you think I’m stupid? That friggin job pays huge and the girls there…OMG.”
Coaches don’t say squat till their gone and for obvious reason.
Yeah, an actual denial would have been “I will not be Notre Dame’s coach next year and they can take my name off the list.” Until he says that, the questions will persist.
John, if robertg actually says something and you can’t post it, you have to at least let us know he’s still out there and not lost somewhere in, oh, I don’t know… Brazil.
@ Aequitas: I always post anything and everything robertg submits. How could I not?
i am for one tired of hearing about stoops and other jobs….he didnt take the michigan job didnt take the w.v job and he def wont take the n.d job his name comes up every year there is a vacancy in the nfl or college if stoops wants to leave then he would have left yrs ago whn bigger schools wanted him or the nfl so get let it go and lets look forward to next season when the sooners will be bk where they belong
As far as I know, Brian Kelly is the only current coach or former coach (Dungy, Gruden, et al) that has not come out and said he will stay at his current job.
Kelly went so far to dodge the question that in one press conference he said he was glad that his name is not mentioned in the same situation as Les Miles, Charlie Weis, and Mark Mangino.
From what I have seen, heard and read, I get the feeling that Kelly is foaming at the mouth to get the Notre Dame job.
Stoops came in and rebuilt Oklahoma to its former glory. I don’t think he wants to do that again. Stoops will be on the Oklahoma sideline next season.
