Swarbrick makes it official: Charlie canned

Athletic director Jack Swarbrick confirmed this afternoon what's been reported for at least a month and what the New York Daily News reported early this afternoon -- Charlie Weis is out as head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Swarbrick made the announcement via a press release.

"We have great expectations for our football program, and we have not been able to meet those expectations," Swarbrick said in the statement. "As an alumnus, Charlie understands those goals and expectations better than most, and he's as disappointed as anyone that we have not achieved the desired results."

So, there you have it.  It's officially official.  The Charlie Weis Era in South Bend is over, and the search for a new head coach will begin immediately.

In other words, Brian Kelly, you're up.

And we should also pause for a moment of silence in honor of esteemed poster robertg, who probably won't be able to participate in this moving tribute as he's likely knee-deep in paperwork trying to get the RICO charges against Swarbrick filed by the close of business today...

Report....John Taylor makes institutionalized mumbler Robertg's day by name dropping him in national column. In other news....man barges into supreme court waving documents but making little sense. update to follow.

Stay Brian Kelly, stay! There's nothing worthwhile in South Bend- you'll have to just take my word on it.

why do you isist that Brian Kelly is the man for this job, but other outlets report Bob Stoops is ND's main target? Footballcoachscoop.com is all over the Bob Stoops angle.

Word out of South Bend is that four restaurants have just closed their doors upon the announcement of the firing. The Irish are considering bringing on a 6' 6" 400 pound leprechaun for the following season in order to offset the food order surplus that will result due to Weis' release. The athletic department is now closed as structural engineers assess the stress damage to Weis' office furniture, and Lou Holtz is being considered as a paperweight for the new coaches desk.

Way too much pressure for an irrelevant football program. ND is like a former chart topper who now plays Vegas exclusively.

correction, "press", not "pressure" Freudian slip.

We will see if there is a rush of quality folks to fill the ND position...I doubt it.

Too bad Father Jenkins didn't realize that all those losses were actually the result of referees who had been bribed, and that the national conspiracy was just about to be revealed by a giant Rico sweep based on solid documentary evidence gathered by robertg's team of investigators. If only Swarbrick and/or Father J. had stayed informed by reading robert's posts, Charlie would still be there and his record would be restated to a 95% winning percentage when the miscreants confessed.

Now we wait to see if any coach who already has a good job and a successful program wants to plunge into the maelstrom.
