Irish hire coming in 7-10 days?

Now that the inevitable Charlie Weis canning has gone down, the next question to be answered — aside from who will be the next head coach — is when the next Notre Dame head coach will be named.

If a Cincinnati high school coach is to be believed, and we don’t see why he shouldn’t, a hiring should come before we hit the middle of December.

Speaking to the Cincinnati Enquirer, St. Xavier head coach Steve Specht said Irish quarterbacks coach Ron Powlus had just left the school following a visit and, during the course of his time there, gave a rough time frame as to when he expected a new coach to be named.

Ron Powlus just left here,” Specht said in an email to the paper. “He said they wanted to have it wrapped up in a week to 10 days. Whether or not that will happen we’ll have to wait and see.”

Of course, the sooner the Irish can name a new coach, the sooner they can lock down their recruiting trail interests, but the week to ten days seems like a reasonable timeline.

The fact that perhaps their main target — Cincinnati head coach Brian Kelly — has a game left to play this weekend makes the timeline even more reasonable.

There are a lot of rumors floating around here in Cincy that the Kelly to ND talk is entirely the result of Kelly himself with virtually no interest from ND. Everyone is saying that Kelly is politicking and being rebuffed, with ND wanting to go with a defensive minded coach. Guess we’ll see… Hope so, I like Brian Kelly & I think UC falls apart again if he leaves.

Ron Powlus is still working at Noter Dame after they canned Charlie? Hard to understand why that guy is involved with football in any manner after his bust of a career. If they didn’t sweep out Powlus with the Weiss dust – ND made another mistake.

Yeah, because Powlus is clearly the reason that their defense has sucked hard. He was only the QB coach for the team, clearly responsible for their defensive struggles. How has Jimmy Clausen done by the way?

GreenBayRockhead – then to follow your logic – Charlie should not have been fired because he was the offensive genius that called all those plays that lead Little Jimmy to his mythical Heisman hopes? Or was that Powlus calling the plays instead of Charlie? Powlus fell down on his hand holding chores for Little Jimmy the night he was slugged at the bar – where was Powlus that night? Wherever it was – he wasn’t doing his job of keeping his QB1 out of the way of punches by irate fans.
And the powers that be at ND have it all wrong – the D coordinator should have been the one fired and not Charlie.
Powlus was such a great QB in college – thats why he had such a stellar NFL career. All he is now is a former QB hanging on for dear life to the only job he could get after football kicked him to the curb for not being good enough. If Powlus is/was all that – why wasn’t he on the field with a UFL team? Because he sucked at ND and carried that over to this pro career.

They’re once again going to rush to get a new coach in place, so as not to lose the current recruiting season, and in doing so will once again name the wrong coach! They will have to do it all over again in 2012.

    Pier588,
By using your line of reasoning only an elite football player could succeed as a coach. This will come as a huge surprise to Urban Meyer, Pete Carroll, Bob Stoops, Jim Tressel, and others. I think coaching skills and athletic skills do not necessarily exist together. In fact, most of the really successful coaches were not that successful on the field.

I’ve got two words UR BAN.
Hey ND paid Charlie an unbelievable sum of money and he never was a head coach anywhere. Why not give urban a raise of say $10 million over his $24 million Florida contract and wrap him up once and for all. I like Kelly but Kelly doesn’t have the appeal to recruits like Urban does and could for the Irish.
My second choice is Stoops. He also can bring big name recruits to South Bend and again he’s a proven commodity with a National Title under his belt, a half a dozen big twelve titles and a few more national title game appearances.
The Irish need to stop settling for coordinators and second tier head coaches and bring in a big gun.
Do you notice how Lou Holtz always smiles when he talks about the Irish. Lou should still be roaming the sidelines – just like Joe Pa. Lou didn’t retire he was forced out by ND who couldn’t stand the fact that Lou was getting close to Knute Rockne’s win record at ND – one more season and Lou would have surpassed him. I love Knute but I think even Knute would have kept Lou in place – win record on the line and all.
UR – BAN UR – BAN UR – BAN
