Report: Irish eyeing an Edsall

Finally, a new name to kick around a little bit when it comes to the Notre Dame coaching vacancy.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, a source has informed them that a Notre Dame representative has been in contact with UConn head coach Randy Edsall in order to gauge his interest in the position.

The Hartford Courant, on the other hand, is reporting that their sources are not hearing that the two sides have spoken.

Edsall certainly doesn’t have the “star” power of a Bob Stoops or Brian Kelly, but he would certainly be an interesting coaching path for the Irish to take.

The 11-year Huskies coach has been at UConn since their switch to Div. 1-A in 1999, and has overseen the construction of a solid BcS program.  His coaching job this season, especially how he held the football program together in the wake of the Jasper Howard tragedy, has brought kudos and plaudits to Edsall and raised his national profile.

Has that profile been raised enough to make him a viable candidate for an opening such as Notre Dame?  Given his defensive background, and the Irish’s utter lack of defensive prowess, his candidacy most certainly should be taken seriously by the school.

He will finally be given the opportunity to recruit.

I wish that you would quit posting these lies.
Coach Weis did not get fired. He is staying at Notre Dame and keeping his money and continuing the winning tradition next year when the cheating officials and crooked scoring stops!
    robertg told me so.
So, you’d better get packing for Brazil.

yeah, lets fire one 6-6 coach for a 5-7 one..BRILLIANT! So he had a good season with (Brown), big deal..sorry, but that would be the WORST fit for ND. Boring offense, hasnt really proven much other than he can get a 1AA school to compete with 1A..thats all well and good, but that doesnt translate into titles just because its ND.
Im not even that thrilled with Kelley to be honest, but Edsall would be much worse..
ps i mean no offense to MR Edsall, thats just my opinion as a 27 year ND fan…

    irish25,
    Huh?
You’re basing your judgments on his record, alone? First off, UConn can’t recruit for a dime. The kids they are starting were good athletes from Massachusetts and Connecticut, maybe a few outside of the Northeast. Edsall performed well with what he was given. UConn’s defense has been pretty damn solid the past few years. Edsall has done a great job bringing them up to D1A and beating some quality teams.
And I don’t know how you can’t be thrilled with the idea of Kelly. The guy has a 52-22 record as a head coach, with the Bearcats on the outside of a national championship.
