Report: Kelly to be next Irish coach

Needless to say, Brian Kelly is at or near the top of any reports looking at a list of potential replacements for Charlie Weis.

According to at least one website, the contemplation can cease.

Citing a source “who is a well-informed person of influence at Notre Dame,” IrishCentral.com is reporting that Kelly will be the next head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

The source told the site that the Cincinnati head coach is the preferred choice of the Irish, and that he is expected to eventually sign a deal with the school.

Kelly, according to the report, is expected to guide the Bearcats through the rest of the regular season and through their bowl game before joining the Irish in South Bend.

Kelly has been largely non-committal throughout the rumor mill process, telling reporters that he wanted to get through this weekend’s Big East showdown with Pitt and then, as the coach put it, “we can talk about other things.”

This morning on a Cincinnati radio show, Kelly denied that he was going anywhere when he was asked by the host if he was staying or going.

I’m stayin’, man, I’m stayin’.  Why would I go?  It’s always about staying first, first and foremost.”

So, there you have it.  Kelly will be the next head coach at Notre Dame.  Or he’s staying at Cincinnati.  One of the two.

And that’s about as narrowed down and cleared up as it’s going to get for about 7-10 days at the earliest.

Any word on who they Irish are looking at after they fire Kelly?

Ah, John, what little you know…
Irish Central is not ND affiliated or related. It’s a website about Irish-Americans and related topics. Obviously, they’d be happy to throw this out there. It’s clearly written with a slant as well. What a joke.

Seriously, if you are willing to post this garbage from this garbage, non-affiliated with ND website, then why not run links to footballcoachscoop? They seem way more credible than Irish Central. Footballcoach scoop says Kelly signed the extension, and that BK is not a candidate for the job. ND has their sights on Edsell and Harbaugh…

Irish Illustrated is site for old Irish ladies to read about the latest Virgin Mary siting. It isnt a sports website.

getlikeme: footballcoachscoop is now reporting that Kelly has been offered the job and hasn’t signed the Cincinnati extension. Nobody really knows what’s going on, but everybody seems very anxious.

So this will be the last year Cincinnati has any prominance, I suppose… Gilyard and Pike will be gone, right? And now we can say bye to Kelly…

  8. edgy says: Dec 2, 2009 7:42 PM

Why would you say that? It’s just a matter of getting a good coach in to continue the job. Let’s not forget that Kelly took over for Dantonio and whether people want to believe it or not, has not had the best of recruiting classes since he’s been there. Much of what he’s done has been to get his coaching staff to get the most of of his players and as long as the Bearcats hire a coach with that kind of a background, they can continue to win.

@sevenirongator – Best comment this week.
John Taylor – You’re just digging that RICO hole deeper and deeper my friend. You’re on a sinking ship, and I’m getting off before robertg hauls everyone who comments on this site into court.
I think Florio’s hair can talk its way out of a conviction, but you’re screwed my friend.

@ Wrathchild: We need one of those ROTFL emoticons — Florio’s hair.
Oh, and RICO blasts will never get old…

How are you gonna say this is UC’s last year of prominence?
UC’s defense wasn’t the greatest this year but they did bring a lot of pressure on the QB and force turnovers, and played pretty well in my opinion considering Cincinnati is near the very bottom in the country in T.O.P.
Zach Collaros has a QB rating of over 195, and probably could have been in the Heisman running. He accounted for 14 touchdowns in basically 6 games.
Gilyard will be gone but Armon Binns and DJ Woods have showed promise. Woods has great hands and route running ability, and Binns is just huge. Ben Guiduli will be back as well.
Isiah Pead will be a great RB. UC’s offense will change next year to be more balanced, because Pead can flat out make people miss.
As a UC student, and fan… I’m really excited about next year.
