Mangino reportedly out at Kansas

The Mark Mangino saga — and era — is apparently over at Kansas, both the Wichita Eagle and ESPN.com are reporting.

According to ESPN.com‘s Joe Schad, Mangino is out and will not return as the Jayhawks’ coach next season.  The Eagle is reporting the same, and is also reporting that Mangino and the school have reached an agreement on a settlement.

The team is expected to be notified of the news at a meeting this evening.

Kansas players and assistant coaches were meeting with athletic director Lew Perkins inside the Jayhawks’ football complex, and an announcement is expected this evening. Shortly after 6 p.m. [CT], coaches and players and Perkins arrived at the complex. Mangino was not seen.

Mangino has been the subject of an investigation since the middle of last month over his alleged treatment of players.

This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. They guy was a great coach – there was no progressive discipline – they just fire him. Looks like they were looking for a reason to get rid of him. They’ve never been relevant before Mangino – morons in my opinion.
Hope Mangino lands somewhere better soon.

Between Mangino and Weis, college football’s collective cholesterol level has dropped 180 points in the last week.

I’m sure the settlement included a lifetime All you Can Eat buffet card somewhere.

Makes me think of a boot camp instructor saying, “son, where are you from? Kansas seargant. Kansas, the only things that come from Kansas are steers and queers. Which one of you are you private?”
Kansas firing Mangino is pathetic. Pre Mangino this program was pathetic and will most likely go downhill because the players have succeeded to become too close with the administration.
Mangino deserves to go to some Texas school where no one is going to question him, similar to Bob Knight when he went to Texas Tech.
He’s a bad ass coach and calls his players out. Some players can’t handle it, not because Mangino’s such a bad ass, but more because they can’t handle any discipline in their lives.
Kansas unfortunately had to recruit more junior college and/or fringe players because they could get the same athlete of an Oklahoma or Texas but have to deal with their issues that the big time teams deal less with. Aqhib Talib is a good recent example. I’m not sure if he has anything good/bad to say about him, but he definitely was a loose cannon and has been since he’s been in the NFL.
This only continues the weakening of the Big 12 North.
