Fiesta eyeing TCU-Boise matchup

Provided Nebraska doesn’t throw a wrench into the works by upsetting Texas in the Big 12 Championship game, non-automatic qualifiers TCU and Boise State are looking square in the face of berths in a BcS bowl.

And, according to an online report, they could be looking at each other square in the face across the line of scrimmage come January.

CBS Sports.com‘s Dennis Dodd is reporting today that the Fiesta Bowl would be open to matching up the two unbeaten squads — provided the Broncos “hold off” New Mexico State — in their BcS game.

While nothing is certain, Fiesta officials were favorably considering such a matchup this weekend based on attendance and television appeal. The Fiesta’s interest in the game shot up recently when it realized the potential TV ratings appeal of such a game.

One concern for Fiesta officials is how TCU will travel if they decide to go with a Horned Frogs-Broncos matchup.

TCU, as noted by Dodd, struggled to sell out home games this year even in the midst of an unbeaten run that saw the Horned Frogs rise to No. 4 in the country.

That concern could be mitigated, however, by how well Boise State traveled in 2007 for their school’s historic Glendale matchup with Oklahoma.

All that being said, I would personally prefer to see the two schools matched up with BcS conference teams, if for nothing more than to afford the non-AQs the opportunity to further drive home the point that the top rung of their respective conferences — at least this year — are at or near the same level as most of their Big 6 brethren.

Who wants to watch 2 teams that play nobody of signifigance in the regular season???
They need to make it Boise vs a BCS school and expose Boise for the 2nd tier school they really are.
Get a playoff system in place as fast as possible to crown a TRUE national champion. This BCS crap stinks badly!!!

I totally agree. The Frogs and the Broncos both should be given the opportunity to play the best team the BCS as to offer. Both teams (at this time will be unbeaten in their conferences) have proven they can play with the best or they would not be ranked 4th and 6th respectively.
The country really wants a true National Champion so why not have 1/2 matchup; a 3/4 matchup, a 5/6 matchup, and a 7/8 matchup. Since we want have a chance for a College Play-Off system for several years to come, I think this would be the next best thing.
This 4 game set-up would allow the top 4 Bowl locations a great game.
I concur: This present BCS Crap really stinks.

I don’t want to see Boise vs TCU just because it would be another excuse for the B.S. system to marginalize these two schools. Yes, put them up against other BS schools and lets see what they can do – which is what I think the B.S. is afraid of – Boiose and TCU playing weel or god forbid – winning.

So you must be from where? SEC conference, Big 10 conference? Seriously, the hate talk about Boise State is ridiculous. How much more do they have to do to prove that they are worthy of respect? Boise played Oklahoma 2 years ago and WON! Boise played Oregon the last 2 years and WON! Boise will play Virginia Tech next season and will probably WIN! Don’t blame TCU and Boise for the conference they are stuck in. Fact of the matter is, they have played tough teams outside their conferences and won. They are both more than a second tier football team, they can definitely run with the big dogs!!!
I do agree with the playoff system rather than the BCS system, but please don’t knock Boise for their weak conference. They have had a solid football team in place ever since Chris Peterson came to Boise, and they have a team who deserves respect. Furthermore, they invited 10 major conference teams to play them, and all of them turned them down. What are they afraid of??? Just saying………

Matching TCU and Boise St would be ultimate insult to both organizations. They deserve to matched against what the BCS believes is the best. It is the only way the computer will valid a win. We played each other last year and what did if buy us with this Big Crappy System?

Making TCU and Boise State play each other would be the ultimate insult to both orgainizations. These two team must play a BCS team for the computor to validate the win. We played each other last year and what did it get us? A double digit rating to start the season. We must stop this Big Crappy System!

Patterson says that he’s against a playoff because if a team loses, that’s the end of their season. Well, I respectfully disagree. Here is my plan, which incorporates a playoff AND the bowls and I’ve been trying to get people at all levels to look at this for 20 years:

Come on, John, take a look at let’s get a discussion going on my plan’s merits. :)

A lot of people have looked but no one seems to want to comment, either here or there. I have presented this to the commishes of the WAC and MW but neither have replied.

Why not? Match the two teams that don’t play anyone during the year…. Look at strength of schedule – Sagarin rating for example – BSU 91st? 91st! TCU 84th! UC is 77th! Could this be why no one has any respect for these guys? Maybe – play someone during the year and validate that you are for real, then we can talk! Oh, and for the rest of the BCS – 6 of the top 12 teams are in the top 20 strength of schedule, the top 3 are 39,27,49…

Think they might have some people scared of losing to a non-BCS team.

Boise State vs TCU – no thanks …
Boise State vs Alabama, TCU vs Texas, thats more like it.

  12. psupgm says: Dec 5, 2009 9:10 PM

Let’s get real. At least a few of the predictors are starting to realize that the best matchup for Boise State is Penn State. This is a ratings dream for the Fiesta Bowl. Sorry Iowa fans but your the 2008 Boise State of this year.

  13. edgy says: Dec 5, 2009 9:57 PM

Come on, guys, no one has anything to say – positive or negative – about my plan? My God, a lot of you have viewed it but no one has commented. Did anyone try the Sports Quiz?

TCU and Boise should tell the Fiesta Bowl to hang it up their backside. The deeply flawed bowl system needs an enema, and these two great teams could be the ones to stick the hose in.

Awesome! Poinsettia Bowl II: This time it’s personal. Seriously though, love the idea of a patronizing BCS kids table, it’s hilarious.

I am from the Southeastern Conference and I have coached for 13 years. I believe that they should either take the top team from each conference or the top eight teams in the standings; play them off until one is the winner of it all. This will find the true National Championship. So you fans get out there and get on your Presidents of the Universities, force them to get it together, it is up to them. But, for right now I would love to see Boise State and TCU play a BCS Team, because they both are undefeated. But, it would be interesting to see which one is the best of the two. I feel that is would be a great Bowl Game and a close game. I hate teams being matched in bowls and then one team blows the other out, this is not interesting, keep people on the edge of their seats, until the final second runs off of the clock. Good Luck to your favorite team. Happy New Year.

  17. windfarm says: Dec 6, 2009 3:47 PM

This would be a slap in the face to both TCU and Boise St., and a move by the BCS that would show they are scared that each team could beat a BCS conference team and expose the flaws in their system.
Geographically, that doesn’t really make sense either. TCU would be much better suited to play Florida in the Sugar Bowl.

  18. edgy says: Dec 6, 2009 4:21 PM

I don’t think that the BCS wants the embarrassment like last year when Alabama took on “lowly” Utah. Really, TCU vs Cincinnati and Boise State vs Florida would be two better match-ups. Who cares that TCU is better than Boise or Boise is better than TCU, I want to see if the Big Boys can keep up with them. TCU beat the ACC runner up while Boise State beat the Pac-10′s rep in the Rose Bowl, so let’s see if the guys who avoid scheduling them can beat them as well.

Dead on. The Fiesta Bowl is going to bank a TON of money for this too, because they don’t have to pay much to the smaller teams either!
AND they’re still selling out tickets like crazy! But they’re still out there… I found this helpful site when I was looking around for tix to the bowl game:
    2010 Fiesta Bowl Tickets
They have the major vendors and help you compare prices between them. Their blog is hilarious too – check this one out:
