'Horns stumble into title shot

First of all, congratulations to Texas for beating Nebraska 13-12 to win the Big 12 championship.

Second of all, what the f--- was Texas doing on the play before the game-winning field goal?

Third of all, the TCU Horned Frogs should be playing Alabama in the BcS title game.

Fourth of all, Ndamukong Suh should be in New York City for the Heisman ceremony.

Fifth of all, the Nebraska kicker, on the kickoff after what should've been the game-winning field goal, handing the Longhorns the ball at the 40-yard line after a kick out of bounds?  WTF?

Sixth of all, the TCU Horned Frogs should be playing Alabama in the BcS title game.

Again, congratulations to Texas for their berth in the title game.  They've had a great season, an unbeaten season.

They're just not the team that hails from the great state of Texas that should be playing for the crystal.  Not after tonight.

I agree with all the above points except number one.

Plain and simple, the BCS didn't want smaller schools like Boise State, Cincinatti or TCU in the National Championship Game. What a gift they just gave Texas. The Nebraska coach should have taken his team off the field and let them kick without a defense on the field. Complete BS.

At least Alabama EARNED their way into the National Championship Game

Texas doesent deserve the shot at the NC.......they lucked out......a playoff is necessary........3 undefeated teams that cant get a shot......ridiculous

  4. overratedgators says: December 6, 2009 12:10 AM ET

Well, I'm sure after tonight's game, the BCS will see the error of their ways and invite TCU instead of ... LOL ... sorry, almost got that out without laughing.

This has to be the worst article I have read on this site. You are either high or really tired.

This is journalism at its finest. TCU has spent all season punching 8 year olds and Texas has actually had to play real teams.

People like you can keep thinking teams like TCU deserve a title shot just to add fuel to the fire, but until they start playing tougher non-conference games they don't deserve anything.

    Horns over Tide.

  6. Vegasvikingfan says: December 6, 2009 12:17 AM ET

Nebraska gave that game away! They are who we thought they were, and we let 'em off the hook! Crown their ass! (never gets old)

  7. wrath4771 says: December 6, 2009 12:22 AM ET

Seriously, was there a rule that states Nebraska has to kick the ball out of bounds? And I'm sure we'll hear how great McCoy was when in reality - in a real world - we'd be talking how Suh wrapped up the Heisman.

  8. Wrathchild says: December 6, 2009 12:25 AM ET

Agreed, Shu deserves to be there much more than Tebow does.

  9. Doctor Bull says: December 6, 2009 12:25 AM ET

I think Cincy is hands down the team that should be getting a shot at Bama out of those three. Their SOS is the best and the only reason they aren't getting more notoriety is the popularity of Texas and the lovable Cinderella that is TCU.

  10. horns_05 says: December 6, 2009 12:51 AM ET

If Bama had beaten the Gators by 1, all ya'll haters would still be pimpin' them for the NC. You show too much disrespect for a great Nebraska defense. Texas didn't play its best game, but Nebraska is a fine team and about 5 points from being 12-1, just like 'em gaters.

  11. Beauregard says: December 6, 2009 1:02 AM ET

We won't even talk about that complete BS pass interference call......Oh well, can't blame the refs. Neb just couldn't move the ball when they had to.
Congats to the Horns. Hope you guys win it all now.

  12. wrath4771 says: December 6, 2009 1:03 AM ET

How can anyone defend who Texas played? Nebraska played their tails off, but offensively Texas could have pulled all eleven guys and it would have taken Nebraska eight plays to score. Oklahoma was beat up this year and they had a difficult time with Texas Tech. TCU beat Utah, BYU and Clemson. Yeah maybe not the three biggest name sin the world, but all three are better than anyone Texas played this year. Oh and BYU didn't struggle with Oklahoma like Texas did.

  13. brfer says: December 6, 2009 1:06 AM ET

It will be Alabama vx. TX. You guys make a big deal about Cincinnati, but they also escaped by 1 point, BIG DEAL... and TCU? Who do they play? or Boise? Honestly Texas or FLorida are 10 times better than Cincinnati or TCU or Boise, and even Florida with one loss should be ranked ahead of TCU, Boise and Cincinnati.... I hope Florida will be ranked No. 3 ahead of all those weak teams....
Yes, I agree with a play off system, but just because you are undefeated it does not mean that you are actually good, as I said other teams are far better than TCU, Boise and Cincinnati, teams that 1 or 2 losses that play in REAL conferences....

  14. Voice of Football says: December 6, 2009 2:58 AM ET

Oh, what a surprise. Another snide, anti-Texas John Taylor article.

After all, TCU won 45-10 at Wyoming, whereas Texas only won there 41-10. Oooooooohhhh WHERE IS MY TIN FOIL CONSPIRACY HAT?!?!

  15. NinerNation says: December 6, 2009 3:18 AM ET

Just because you say other teams are better, does not make it true.

If you know anything about football, you'd know that TCU is a good football team. If you do not believe it, you've either never seen them play, or you're an idiot.

TCU should be in the NC game, Texas would get their asses handed to them by TCU, Boise, and Cincinnati. The NC game will not be worth watching unless you're a fan of Alabama.

  16. john pileggi says: December 6, 2009 3:53 AM ET

A win is a win. There is no perfect system.

  17. SmackMyVickUp says: December 6, 2009 5:32 AM ET

Ndamukong Suh should be in New York City for the Heisman ceremony.

Any BCS title game is a joke. Playoff system or don't crown a "national champion" because it is not actually a national champion. It is merely a BCS champion.

  18. IndyColt45 says: December 6, 2009 7:39 AM ET

You could hand select 70 players from every team TCU played this year and not field a team that could beat Nebraska.

  19. AustinTexas1961 says: December 6, 2009 7:56 AM ET

Good grief, what a game! I truly thought my team was done for. It was a neck-and-neck game, with the Texas and Nebraska defenses making their mark. Yes, it is a heartbreaking result for Nebraska fans. But..it happened. (I was mystified why Texas didn't call a time-out prior to the field goal attempt. Mack Brown was asleep at the wheels on that one.) Both teams played well (and not so well) in pivotal moments. But the Texas Longhorns managed to pull it off, somehow. During the season, even Texas fans have wondered: which Texas team will show up? Texas, especially the offense, obviously needs to get their act together against the Crimson Tide. Hopefully, the "good" Texas team shows up against Alabama. Hook 'em Horns!

  20. BcS_h8er says: December 6, 2009 9:03 AM ET

Who care who plays in any of the BcS games? The college season ended last night, the rest is just BS. A Mythical champ. Playoffs NOW!!!!!!

  21. rolltide says: December 6, 2009 9:18 AM ET

Ahhh, the first snows are falling, Christmas trees are being put up, and the first fans of sissy schools in non-existant conferences that play at best 1 real game a year are demanding playoffs. I love this time of year.

  22. BakerSucks says: December 6, 2009 9:22 AM ET

Cincinnati should be playing for a NC. Their strenghth of schedule is higher than TCU, Boise St., AND TEXAS...Cincinnati has beaten 4 ranked teams this year and just beat the number 14 team in the country on the road. Texas struggled to get by #23 Nebraska at home essentially. What has TCU done? They have played what 2 ranked teams this year? As it is Cincy will go to the Sugar Bowl and smack down those over-rated gators. And yes, Cincinnati can beat Alabama.

  23. PolegoJim says: December 6, 2009 10:39 AM ET

One fact left out... if Nebraska actually fielded even a mediocre offense, Texas would have lost, and should have lost.

Alabama is going to smoke Texas' brisket all the way back to Austin- which they would have done to Cinci, TCU, Boise, and anyone else. They made a great Florida team look silly, pretty much like Ohio State pretender level.

The message here simple for Nebraska: Bo - go get yourself an offense that matches your defense. Without Suh AND and an offense next year, it's going to be painful.

  24. Beaudreaux says: December 6, 2009 10:42 AM ET

Wow, what a maroon! (Actually I think the cartoon character who uttered that line has more brains than you Mr. Taylor). Let's see, Texas struggles against one of the top defenses in the league, yet leads almost the entire game. You talk about bad calls but fail to mention that the replay clearly showed the Texas kickoff returner was NOT down at the one. Also to the other folks, sorry but it is pass interference when you don't turn and look back at the ball. Texas won the game, a game that TCU may or may not have won, but the fact is that Texas was the team that played the game, and found a way to come out on top. So sitting at home earns you a shot at the title and winning your conference championship means you should go home? What. A. Maroon.

  25. Bech72 says: December 6, 2009 10:47 AM ET

The inferior "footballtalk" website stays true to themselves on this one. Taylor, how can you think TCU deserves a shot at Bama? If anyone in the top 5 does it is UC. They play in a BCS conference and have played at least 4 top 25 teams this season; hell, I'd argue that they've had a tougher schedule than Texas.

As for getting on the kicker, seriously? That was Pelini's fault. They should have kicked it deep and trusted in their coverage unit; squibbing there was a costly mistake. Pelini was coaching not to lose rather than coaching to win. I believe it was the great Herm Edwards that said, "You play to win the game!" Last night Pelini did not do that.

The only thing I can agree on is the comments about Suh. That was by far the most dominant defensive effort I have ever seen. He should be in the running, and any team that passes on him in April is going to regret it.

  26. Robert says: December 6, 2009 11:11 AM ET

Noone lost that game for Nebraska except for...Nebraska. Their defense was outstanding, but their offense should be ashamed of themselves for that brutal performance. I think the OC owes Bo Pelini a big fat apology for the terrible playcalling and lack of execution. They had every chance to win that game yesterday, and all the BCS slappies in their great big mansions are so very thankful that Texas won last night.

As a Longhorns fan and UT grad who has lived in Fort Worth for 25 years, this has been a bittersweet season. I like the Frogs and think their program and their coach have class through and through. Do they deserve a shot at the title? Sure. As do Boise State and Cincinnati. The BCS ranking system is imperfect, but a playoff system would be imperfect, too. As for Nebraska, wow, what a team! Suh spent more time in UT's backfield than most of the starting running backs did. It wouldn't trouble me in the least if he won the Heisman. That said, you can criticize the officiating until you're blue in the face, but the simple fact is that the Huskers had first and goal after a return and couldn't put the ball in the end zone. A total of 106 yards of offense, which means that there were TWO very good defensive teams on the field. The victory was earned, not stolen.

  28. Voice of Football says: December 6, 2009 12:08 PM ET

ROFL... I just looked at TCU's pansy assed schedule. They beat only 2 ranked teams (Texas beat 3) gave up 21 points to a 1-AA team (Texas State) and played teams in their regular season schedule that Texas was criticized for playing in their non-conference schedule (Wyoming). What a freakin' joke anyone who thinks TCU would "dominate" any unbeaten BCS team. Really... stop smoking crack. Cincinnati has more grounds for complaints by far... but the system is what the system is. Last season Texas got screwed... so believe me, Texas knows what other teams are feeling this season (even though they haven't been screwed). Alabama vs Texas in the National Championship - DEAL WITH IT! LMAO!

  29. Robert Garcia (vegasrobert) says: December 6, 2009 12:12 PM ET

Texas deserves a lot more credit for finding a way to win against a VERY good Nebraska defense. The horns earned their shot at a NC with an undefeated season in the Big 12 and nd the conference win over that defense.

  30. DG0122 says: December 6, 2009 12:22 PM ET

there was clearly a second on the clock when the ball hit. lets talk about phantom chop-block calls, or no call on a blatant block-in-the-back on the long punt return.

"Texas deserves a lot more credit for finding a way to win against a VERY good Nebraska defense. The horns earned their shot at a NC with an undefeated season in the Big 12 and nd the conference win over that defense."

LOL! A botched kickoff that puts them at the 40, a horse collar tackle and they got 35 free yards... no credit to Texas. Just like Va Tech we choked at the wrong time again. Oh and as for Suh being gone and our defense not as good next year? Check that again... with Crick and Steinkuhler (who will take Suh's spot) there will not be a drop off on the D line.

  32. DPG says: December 7, 2009 4:34 PM ET

Put down the Kool-Aid and walk away! Any idiot that thinks TCU couldn't run with a BCS "annointed" should pull their head outta their wreath. Or have you all forgotten a little game not long ago between a little WAC team and a Big 12 Powerhouse? In fact, go ahead and check to see how the mids have fared in bowl games against the elite 6 since 2000. Go ahead, I'll wait.
Strength of schedule? Really shorthorns? Any one care to guess which Big 12 champion played 8 (EIGHT) teams with losing records from the previous year? Teams like TCU pick up the scraps left over from the OU's, UT's, Tech's and A&M's and they likely would have played in, if not won that conference's championship game. Say it loud - PLAYOFF!!
