Much of the BcS talk of the last couple weeks — aside from just who will play for the crystal — has centered on the very real possibility that two schools from non-automatic qualifying conferences are likely headed to BcS games for the first time ever.
Part of that line of thinking was predicated on unbeaten Cincinnati handling Pittsburgh in the final week of the season and claiming the Big East’s automatic berth.
Unfortunately for the Broncos, somebody forgot to forward the Panthers the script.
With just over a minute remaining in the second quarter, Pitt is handling the Bearcats quite easily and have run out to 31-10 lead. And the Panthers have the ball inside the five-yard line after blocking a punt.
Should Pitt hold on to beat Cincinnati, the Bearcats would likely (maybe?) still grab one of the four at-large BcS bids. Another would go to the loser of the SEC Championship game, and the third would go to TCU.
That would leave one spot to go to either Iowa, Penn State or Boise State.
In other words, the unbeaten Broncos would — more than likely — be on the outside looking in.
And the decrying of the current system would grow even louder and more resounding. Which may not be a bad thing.
There is absolutely no chance the Big East gets an at large bid, and I say that as a supporter of the Conference. Neither Pitt nor Cinci travel well and cinci took place in the lowest rated BCS game of all time.
Good point. That’s part of the reason why I put the (maybe?) in there.
Part of me wants Boise to get screwed somehow this year, and only because it would further expose the fraud that is the BcS system and possibly help lead to a change. Sucks for the Broncos, but it might be for the greater good.
Even though that is a good point about the big east not traveling well and being a low rated BcS conference, i believe Cincinnati still would deserve to get into a BcS bowl game. If Cincinnati loses that would move Boise St into number 5 and if they leave them out that would cause one hell of an outcry. As much as I would like to see 2 non-BcS conference schools get in, I would enjoy watching hell break loose by leaving them out again.
I guess we need to cheer for Nebraska tonight just to make this picture even more fuzzy.
Grab your popcorn!
I don’t want to see college playoffs, the bowl system is CFB in my opinion. What I would like to see is that the top 15-20 are guaranteed bowls, and everyone else can fight over the scraps.
I am hoping Pitt, Nebraska and Alabama win today and that Florida drops only to number two to setup a rematch between Florida and Alabama. This the leaves two undefeated teams out of the championship game and one totally out of a bcs game.
A playoff is the only fair solution. You can still have the bowl games too.
You CANT have the Bowls & Play-offs, ask any bowl executive ….
Taylor:
Don’t you think the possibility of having 3 undefeated teams after the CFB season is all said and done might be an even more resounding cry for playoffs?
Winner of SEC faces Texas (if Texas wins)
Boise St. and TCU square off
Cincy plays somebody…
at the very least, there will be 2 undefeated teams at the end of the season… possibly 3… how can you claim a team is Natl Champion when there is 2 other teams that haven’t been beaten out there?
