Charlie Weis was fired as Notre Dame’s head coach on Nov. 30 and, since then, has not spoken publicly about his dismissal.
As you can tell by the headline, however, that has changed.
According to the South Bend Tribune, Weis spoke to a small media gathering at his Hannah & Friends Farm, and addressed for the first time his firing.
Among the issues related to his dismissal Weis discussed was just when he knew his five-year run as the Irish’s coach was over.
Weis said that the loss to Navy on Nov. 7 was a big clue, but the full realization hit him following the loss to UConn on Nov. 21. And part of that full realization came in a meeting with athletic director Jack Swarbrick in the aftermath of the loss to the Huskies, where, for all intents and purposes, Weis was told he was out as the Irish coach.
“I felt when we lost to Navy, it did not bode well for where this was headed,” Weis said. “I still felt we had time to resolve the issues, but I thought that was a bad loss. … But really it was the Monday after the Connecticut game, it was over.
“And it was not a bad conversation. Jack and I just sat down and closed the door. I said, ‘Look it, we’re grown men here, where are we?’ We agreed to where it was headed. It was Thanksgiving week. I did not talk to any of the assistants about it, because I thought it would distract them from getting ready for Stanford. The best thing would be to not say one word.”
I have read a good amount of the interview on other sites.
Weis is a good man. A class act!!
Best of luck to you coach!
Did he say “Look it?” He may not be as grown of a man as he thinks.
He belongs as an O-coordinator in the NFL.
Just for cut out to be a HC.
