UVA to talk to Spiders coach

Richmond’s last-second loss to Appalachian State in the Div. 1-AA playoffs — what a concept, playoffs in college football — has opened the door for Virginia to expedite their search for a new head coach.

According to the Associated Press, UVA officials have spoken to their Richmond counterparts and expressed their interest in speaking to head coach Mike London.

London’s agent, Dennis Cordell, apprised the AP of this latest development, and added that no meeting between his client and the Cavaliers has been scheduled.

Given London’s ties to UVA — he was defensive coordinator in 2006 and 2007 after spending the previous four seasons as an assistant on now-former head coach Al Groh’s staff — he was almost tapped as one of the front runners for the opening.

Despite the speculation, London had steadfastly refused to respond to the rumored interest until the completion of the Spiders’ current season.
