Kansas coordinator a candidate for Zips job

Citing a source with knowledge of the situation, the Lawrence Journal-World is reporting that Kansas offensive coordinator Ed Warinner interviewed for the Akron coaching vacancy.

(And, to answer your question, yes, the University of Akron has a football program.  They have uniforms and everything.)

Warinner has been a member of now-former head coach Mark Mangino‘s staff in Lawrence for the last five years, but he was not named one of the three interim head coaches upon Mangino’s resignation.

The coordinator grew up about 40 miles south of Akron, played football at Div. III powerhouse Mount Union and was an assistant for the Zips for one season back in the 1980′s.  He also maintains a deep tie to the high school coaches in the area, which would obviously help in recruiting for the MAC school.

Dang right they have a football program . . . and even a kangaroo mascot. Let’s not forget the 3 and 1/2 notable football personnel to call Akron Home:
    #1 – John Heisman . . .yes, that Heisman
    #2 – Jason Taylor . . . actually a better basketball player in college
#3 – Coach Hayden Fox from the Minnesota State Screaming Eagles (winners of the 1993-94 Pioneer Bowl and National Champions) . . . hey the game was on TV.
#1/2 – Jerry Faust . . . Hey, Notre Dame gets 1/2 the blame for this mess.

@ coops: You forgot about Charlie Frye. Bombed in the NFL, but he was a very good MAC QB.
