Recommendation on new Irish coach imminent?

Even as there has been not much “hard” news coming out regarding Notre Dame’s search for a head coach, there is one report today that a major development could be in the offing by the middle of this week.

According to the New York Post, and citing unnamed sources, athletic director Jack Swarbrick — S-w-a-r-b-r-i-c-k — could make a recommendation on a new head coach to university President Rev. John Jenkins as early as Wednesday of this week.

Just who that coach will be, however, remains shrouded in mystery.

According to various reports, Cincinnati head coach Brian Kelly is the front runner for the opening.  Two sources have been telling us for weeks that Kelly is indeed the choice, but that has yet to come to fruition.

Still others say that UConn’s Randy Edsall, not Kelly, is the one likely to be tapped by Swarbrick to replace Charlie Weis.

One name flying almost completely under the radar is Skip Holtz.  The son of former Irish coach Lou Holtz has done a masterful job at East Carolina, leading the Pirates to a Conference USA title this season.  Given his ties to the school, and the yeomen’s work he’s done at ECU, it would not be surprising to see yet another Holtz on the sidelines in South Bend.

Do not be surprised to hear that Nick Saban is interested.

Three GOOD choices. Born in Hartford, my #1 choice is UConn’s Randy Edsall; however, each of these candidates could exceed woeful-Charlie’s accomplishments (or lack there of). Can anyone bring back the glory?

Does Skip need a drool cup like Papa Holtz does?

Why isn’t Mark Dantonio’s name being thrown around at all?

    @techvet:
I think after 15 of your players go on an Attila the Hun style pillaging tour, it takes a year or so for the dust to settle before you’re considered for any jobs.
I think Skip Holtz would be nuts to take this job. Not saying ND isn’t a great job, but the pressure there is already bad enough, and it would be absolutely suffocating for him. Another good year at ECU and he can probably have his pick of a number of good jobs; Michigan perhaps, Penn St. perhaps, Stanford could open up, Colorado, maybe Georgia to name a few.

no coach can trust swarbrick or jenkins or notre dame any more.
if kelly wants to take the big bucks, go through the motions and then get fired, why should he not do that.
swarbrick and jenkins are not throwing away their own money.
they are throwing away notre dame’s money and those cash flows are rapidly drying up.
of course, swarbrick and jenkins are desperate morons.
however, it is too late for them now.
they have delivered to notre dame’s enemies and to these media shills exactly what they wanted.
