Gerhart accidentally tips NFL hand

Stanford running back and Heisman Trophy finalist Toby Gerhart has one year of eligibility remaining, but it’s been a foregone conclusion amongst Cardinal observers that he would make himself available for the 2010 NFL draft.

Gerhart himself had not tipped his hand about which way he was leaning.  Until yesterday.

Gerhart, according to the San Jose Mercury News, was being interviewed on Comcast’s Chronicle Live show and the subject of the 40-yard dash came up.

“I’m going to start training here shortly, get ready for the (NFL Draft) Combine.”

Host Greg Papa then asked if that meant Gerhart had decided to enter the draft.

Seemingly flustered — like he realized he said something he shouldn’t have — Gerhart stumbled for a second … then talked briefly about making a decision after the Sun Bowl … then added:

But it’s looking like that’s the way it’s going to go.”

The 6-1, 235-pound back has already submitted his paperwork to the NFL Draft Advisory Board, and is expected to project to go somewhere around the second or third round.

If that’s the official projection he receives from the draft board, most expect he will forego his final season at Stanford and enter the 2010 draft as his stock will likely never be any higher than what it is right now.

How is this possible? By all accounts and purposes, Gerhart is listed as a senior…. is this not so?

  2. brasho says: Dec 9, 2009 1:06 PM

Did Gerhart redshirt 2007 when he only had one game played?
Even by the Stanford athletic site he is listed as a senior… http://www.gostanford.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/gerhart_toby00.html
I think he would actually have to apply to the NCAA to have a redshirt year as opposed to the other way around.

Wwwwwwwwwwwow Taylor, what gutter did Florio drag you out of to comment on his message board?
Gerhart is a SENIOR, tough guy. Watch some games next year so you’re informed.

Because he only played in one game in 2007 and was hurt and didn’t play any additional games, he has the ability to petition the NCAA for a medical redshirt which would give him another season of eligibility. By all accounts, it would be a slam dunk for another season if he decides to go that route.
Bottom line is, he can play another season at Stanford if he so desires.
    Hope that clears it up.
    Sincerely,
    The Tough Guy

He be a fool to take another season of punishment at Stanford when he can be getting paid. Gerhart is a very, very smart young man; the NFL will just be the start for him.

John, I absolutely love the fact that you respond to comments on here. Personally, I feel the there is not anything one can gain by the commenting revolution other than some laughs, so you and robertg are the only reasons I even look at the comments, let alone post. Keep up the good work on this site, it’s infinitely better than it was a few years ago.

@ Aequitas: Thank you very much, sir. Or m’am. Don’t want to assume gender like I did with Deb. ;-)

  9. Sean Martin says: Dec 9, 2009 2:58 PM

Wait, is Deb really a woman? All this time I thought it was a man.

  10. Colossus7 says: Dec 9, 2009 3:44 PM

I wonder if they will make him into a FB?

  11. robesi says: Dec 9, 2009 4:21 PM

    Who? Gerhart or Deb?

  12. Aequitas says: Dec 9, 2009 5:05 PM

Anytime, and it’s sir. And yes, I know Aequitas is a woman, but it’s meant to be the nominative form of the Latin noun, not the goddess.
Anyway, too bad there won’t be college football for you to report on next season since “they” are taking down the entire system on civil RICO complaints like Enron et al… even though Enron didn’t go down on RICO, but that’s neither here nor there.

@DG0122: Yes, they did. They mentioned that Gerhart is taking 21 credits this semester so that he can graduate at the end of the semester and train for the Combine in the spring. It was already a done deal at the time, so this article is off when it says Gerhart hasn’t tipped his hand yet.
