Not only are seven current current members of the Michigan State football program faced with a suspension that will cause them to miss the Spartans’ bowl game, but now they have criminal issues to deal with as well.
According to the Detroit Free Press, all seven players have been charged with conspiracy and at least one count of assault or assault and battery. Two players who were booted from the program are facing the same charges as their former teammates.
The charges stemmed from an incident late last month in which upwards of 15 Spartan players allegedly wreaked havoc inside of a campus dorm. That incident was allegedly in retaliation for another incident at a nightclub a day earlier.
The Detroit News lists the players and their charges as follows:
• Roderick Jenrette, 22, of East Lansing; conspiracy and three counts of assault or assault and battery.• Glenn Winston, 20, East Lansing; conspiracy and two counts of assault or assault and battery.• Frederick Smith, 19, Macomb Township; conspiracy and a count of assault or assault and battery.• B.J. Cunningham, 20, Lansing; conspiracy and a count of assault or assault and battery.• Jamiihr Williams, 20, East Lansing; conspiracy and a count of assault or assault and battery.• Mark Dell, 20, Lansing; conspiracy and a count of assault or assault and battery.• Ashton Leggett, 20, Muskegon; conspiracy and two counts of assault or assault and battery.• J’Micheal Deane, 23, East Lansing; conspiracy and a count of assault or assault and battery.• Chris L. Rucker, 21, East Lansing; conspiracy and a count of assault or assault and battery.
All of the charges are misdemeanors, and all of the players on that list have either been dismissed from the program or suspended indefinitely.
Two additional players who were not charged were suspended today for the bowl game for their ties to the incident -- backup wide receivers Chris D. Rucker and Donald Spencer.
