Sumlin closing in on Houston extension

While his name has been attached to the opening at Notre Dame… and Kansas… and Louisville in recent weeks,  there has been no real meat to any of the reports linking Houston’s Kevin Sumlin to any of the vacancies.

In fact, the only meaty conversation has involved a contract extension for the Cougars’ head coach.  And, as it so happens, that talk continued today as both Sumlin and his boss said the two sides are very close to getting a new deal wrapped up.

So close, it appears, that the only thing that needs to be completed is for the sharks in suits — yeah, lookin’ at you, Florio — to wrap their pectoral fins around the particulars.

“Things are moving forward in regards to where we’re going to be and what where doing,” Sumlin said according to the Houston Chronicle. “I’m a football coach. I’m not a lawyer. The language that’s going to be in it, that has to be reviewed by my attorney and agent and we’ll see. I think we’re getting close to where we need to be.”

Athletic director Mack Rhoades echoed his football coach’s thoughts on the state of talks.

“I think we are,” Rhoades said when asked if a deal is close. “I know we are. In principal, we’ve agreed to terms probably 99 percent. Now we turn it over to the attorneys in regards to language.”
