Report: Kansas has spoken with Harbaugh

Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh was the subject of a pretty fair amount of speculation the past few days in regards to the Notre Dame vacancy.

Harbaugh, his agent and Stanford’s athletic director all denied there was a possibility earlier this week and, as you know, the Irish went ahead and hired Brian Kelly.

Unfortunately for the Cardinal faithful, that’s not the last opening with their current coach’s name attached to it.

In a story about the Kansas coaching search, the Kansas City Star reports that Harbaugh has spoken to officials from the school about the opening, and that he is “likely the Jayhawks’ top choice“.  Aside from the fact that Harbaugh is one helluva football coach, part of the reason for his name being attached to the vacancy is the fact that his wife is from Kansas City area.

In addition to Harbaugh being the supposed front runner, the Star also reports that Tommy Tuberville would like to be considered for the job.

“Kansas is a good program,” said Tuberville. “It’s in a conference that you can compete in. It’s really come leaps and bounds over the last few years, going to the Orange Bowl a couple years ago. Obviously, Kansas has made a reputation in basketball, and that’s great. But I think that can just help the football program. You can win in both sports.”

Meanwhile, the Buffalo News is reporting that Turner Gill is, as previously reported, a leading candidate for the job.  The current Buffalo head coach is rumored to have interviewed with athletic director Lew Perkins this past Sunday in New York City.

Nothing against Gill but I’m not sure what he has done to deserve the jump from Buffalo to KU.
No way Harbaugh leaves for KU.

I honestly don’t know why Harbaugh would take this job. He is building something special at Stanford; why jump schools now? I guess he is asking himself the following question: who do I have a better chance of beating to get to a bowl game? Personally, he has a better chance in California. Sure he has to compete with USC, Cal and UCLA for recruits, but he is building a reputation. If he moved to KU, then not only would he have to battle Nebraska, OU, UT and OSU for recruits, but he would have to beat them to get to a BcS bowl.
I guess he’s just whipped if he wants to move to the KC area…
