Butch Jones has long appeared to be the front runner for Marshall’s coaching vacancy.
Now that the Central Michigan head coach appears earmarked for Cincinnati, where does that leave the Herd in its search for a successor to Mark Snyder?
According to athletic director Mike Hamrick, he has interviewed six candidates for the position. Jones was one of those, and the sixth interview took place Tuesday night from what Hamrick said.
It’s been confirmed that Florida State offensive line coach Rick Trickett interviewed this past Friday. West Virginia head coach Doc Holliday and Cincinnati Bengals tight ends coach Jonathan Hayes both reportedly interviewed in recent days. Wake Forest defensive coordinator Brad Lambert is also said to be a target, as is interim coach Rick Minter.
There’s one other candidate being mentioned — Liberty head coach Danny Rocco — but seems to be some uncertainty as to the level of talks. The Huntington Herald-Dispatch reports that it’s believed Rocco has already sat down for an interview, while the Charleston Daily Mail states that there has been contact between the school and Rocco’s agent, but no interview has taken place.
Hamrick said they’re “finishing up the interviews” Tuesday night. The Herald-Dispatch reports that Hamrick hopes to have a new coach in place by the end of the week.
At this point in time, it’s not clear exactly who that coach may be as, given Jones’ presumed departure from the process, there is no clear-cut front runner.
Why is this vacancy such an interesting topic? Does Butch Jones have any ties with Marshall?

Holliday could have it already.
Holliday is not the WVU head coach as that position is currently filled by Gomer Pyle. Would be shocked if Holliday took the Marshall job as he is Don “run it up the middle” Nehlen’s choice to be the WVU coach.
