Nation's leading rusher out with injury

Not only does Fresno State trail Wyoming 7-0 late in the first quarter, but they may have also lost their leading rusher for the rest of the first half.

If not longer.

Ryan Mathews, who leads the nation in rushing yards per game, limped to the locker room with what appeared to be an injury to his lower left leg.

Mathews was injured at the end of a six-yard run and with the Bulldogs driving deep into Cowboys’ territory.  His replacement, Lonyae Miller, fumbled two plays later inside the ten-yard line; the fumble was recovered by Wyoming.

At the time of his injury, Mathews had rushed for 18 yards on three carries.

UPDATE 5:07p.m. ET: Just as I published this version, Mathews returned from the locker room to the sidelines.  There was no word yet on whether he will return to the playing field or what was the specific nature of the injury.

UPDATE 5:11 p.m. ET: Of course, Mathews came back out for Fresno State’s next series, looking none the worse for the wear.
