Texas’ D.J. Monroe had a DWI charge against him dropped Friday, likely clearing the way for the return specialist to play in the national title game against Alabama.
Monroe was charged with DWI on Nov. 15, but a hearing scheduled for Friday was cancelled after a plea agreement was reached. Instead of the original charge of driving while intoxicated, Monroe pleaded guilty to obstruction of a passageway.
Monroe was suspended indefinitely following his arrest and missed the last three games of the season. His lawyer is hopeful that the resolution of the case will allow his client to play in the championship game.
“He’s extremely happy,” attorney Brian Roark said. “He is hoping to play in the national championship game and continue his career at Texas.”
Head coach Mack Brown is away on a recruiting trip, but will address Monroe’s status with the player and his family early this week according to the Austin American-Statesman.
Before his arrest, Monroe had returned two kicks for touchdowns this season.
